That you believe that a museum of black culture is a threat to you as a white person makes you highly likely to be a screaming racist.

What part of our culture as white brits isn’t covered by the many, many, many museums or other cultural locations throughout the country?

“There’s nothing celebrating skinheads!”

Ok. Fair point.

God, how depressing.

The frankly insulting point about our museums somehow being about whiteness has already been answered.

The movement looking to create a museum dedicated to a race and skin colour isn't white....though it has plenty of white allies. Yet you say I'm likely to be a 'screaming racist'.

I make the correct statement that this is identity politics for one but not another. If you are going to highlight difference on racial grounds then it is hypocritical to say that no one else can do it.

I don't suggest it is a good idea at all.....That's the point of the original post. I'd also point out that there would be plenty of non white people who'd agree with me about this not being a good idea.

I'm white, it's apart of my identity.....if we are going to have museums about racial identities then lets have them for all the major ones.

Or none at all.

I would compare celebrating a race or colour (any race/colour) with school children getting a medal just for finishing last.

To me this is like getting a participation medal just for taking part which is ultimately pretty demeaning for everybody concerned.

Just because you belong to a certain race or are of a certain colour does not mean that you share any of the achievements being
Celebrated.

Why not have a Jewish, Indean or Chinese culture museum? The answer: Because these peoples have generally thrived here.

By having a museum celebrating black culture is to me almost a subtle reminder that very often the black community is one that struggles to compete on nearly every level with the exceptions
of sport and music.

The biggest thing we can do to praise and raise up the black (or any other) community is to treat them equally and not take part in condescending nonsance.

I’d be more concerned with how young black people might be influenced by a black museum rather than there being one. Most white people will find their history in many of the museums we have. Black people won’t. Hrolf makes some good points on why. It’s the content and message of the museum that could be of concern for me, not that there is one.

The black historian on the BBC is excellent on black history with the added benefit of him not taking any of it personally, and therefore hopefully not the viewer, although reading some of the black, white or any race comments on social media when you get the daily offended post referring to 3-4+ generations ago I can’t be confident all won’t calm down and realise 100 years ago wasn’t yesterday.

I have often wondered why people of colour choose to live here when they say our society was built on slavery and stealing from the commonwealth. Yet still more and more people from Africa and the west indies choose to live here.

So it's not a good idea to have a black museum and a place where black and white and asian people can learn about our culture.

O I'm black with West Indian roots.

By the way if you don't consider your self someone of colour do you consider yourself someone of no colour at at all?

How do you feel about having a white museum in the West Indies so black and other people can learn about white culture?

Unless you are black.

I don't have a problem with that Stirling.

Be nice to embrace White history as it would Black history.

There is no such movement dedicated to race / skin colour museum and so it has no supporters.

The idea is a museum of Britain's Black Culture, unless you deny the existence of such a cultural contribution I can see no reason why you would object.

It makes a difference to some, but personally speaking as someone who has a white sister in law and a white brother in law, mixed race nieces and nephew makes no difference at all.

Wherever you come from it's always good to embrace your culture.

Rather obviously the word 'black' is the clue as to the race/skin colour museum Stevie boy.

As has been said, if you have no objections to it then I take it that you also have no objections to a 'white culture' museum being created as previously mentioned.

For those saying this already exists in the form of current museums this isn't true.

If you asked those museums do they operate as 'white culture' museums they would oppose that viewpoint.

So if you are going to set up identity museums then what goes for one identity should also go for others.

As I stated.....this leads nowhere good.

I think you'll find that they already know quite a lot about white culture.

The idea mooted is the establishment of a museum of Black British Culture. So the flip side of that coin would be a museum in Kingston Jamaica celebrating White Caribbean Culture.

I'm at a bit of a loss as to what kind of exhibits your museum might display?

Branding irons in a variety of different forms?

Sugar cane mills complete with mutilated fingers and hands?

A list of illegitimate children fathered by plantation owners?

Got any good ideas you'd like to add?
