Meyer looks pretty when making his passes and is very effective when we are in our flow, but when our backs are up against the wall give me McArthur all day long. He puts the hard graft in and gives us gritt in midfield that I think Meyer cannot offer. It’s difficult because there is different points in every game when both would excel. Agreed - Meyer wouldn’t have been suited for that first half yesterday. If McArthur hadn’t of been out there we might have been two or three down at half time. Perhaps there’s a place in the team for Meyer, Luka and McArthur?

So they are knackered and we aren’t? We were all over them second half yesterday, I thought it was because we’d gone up a gear and were the better team, I’m a bit disappointed it was just because they were knackered.

He is being asked to get forward a hell of a lot, and gets into areas where Max Meyer could deliver way more damage.

The game at the top level has changed massively in the five years we’ve been in the Premier League and I’m not sure a team of our stature can enjoy the luxury of a playing a number 10. With regard to yesterday JM was far from lost in West Ham’s penalty box and found some good positions but seems to have picked up the disease from a few of the others of losing his composure in front of goal.

Not sure why in the first half he didn't put his head up to see where he was shooting ? Seemed to have his head down. Clearly by the 2nd half he was having the yips in front of goal like others in the team. This inability to convert in front of goal must be effecting everybody, as we seem to be snatching at every chance across the attack. Cannot fault his work rate though and your points stated.

Didn’t put any words in your mouth, you said I had my head up my arse for suggesting MacArthur in not good at threading through balls - usually a skill we associate with gifted creative players with quick feet and good vision. Does that sound like anyone on our bench? MacArthur is none of those things. Not sure MacArthur been a “threat in the final 3rd” this season tbh. Meyer is not a number 10. He played def mid for schalke. He could be asked to do the exact role that MacArthur did yesterday and we would probably score more goals. Everything you say about MacArthur and his historical importance is basically correct, apart from him being a “threat” this year where he has 2 goals, one of which was a cross. You cannot judge Meyer on 1 or 2 games here or there, he needs a run of games otherwise it’s apples to oranges however the evidence was clear for everyone to see yesterday. MacArthur had a mare, committed the worst miss I have seen all year and in 10 mins on the pitch Meyer added more to our attacking game than MacArthur had all game long.

Meyer had a run of six starts Burnley, Brighton, West Ham, Leicester, Man City, Cardiff. Roy hooked him in the Cardiff game when he was poor. Went to all of these except Brighton. As I’ve suggested before, Roy could do with mixing things up a bit but Meyer has looked panicked at times when he’s received the ball deep in his own half with no immediate option.
