Was that the relegation party, just after Hillsborough?

Yep. Thousands of them along the A23 at

The Red Lion in coulsdon
The Windsor Castle in south Croydon
The Gloucester at the fork in the road on Whitehorse Rd

Then all p1ssed up and ready to fight at Selhurst.

I remember it, Dave Mackay came onto the pitch and tried to quiten them down.

Palace 4, Blues 1, May 13, 1989.

It was an ironic ‘relegation celebration’ that turned sour.Blues were heading into the old Division Three for the first time in their history and 3,100 fans clad in fancy dress descended on Crystal Palace for the final match of the season.

Blues had replaced Garry Pendrey as manager with Dave Mackay shortly before the season’s climax and their mixture of ageing pros and rookie kids just weren’t good enough over the course of the campaign.

But the good-natured send-off was ruined by a minority intent on causing trouble.

The game was held up for 27 minutes as fans scuffled and Mackay went on to the pitch to appeal for calm.

A charge by mounted police eventually dispersed those who had broken through on to the playing surface.

As for the game itself, Ian Wright headed the first goal, which triggered the major disturbance, and Palace went on to score again through an Ian Clarkson own-goal before he completed a hat-trick.

I remember being crushed against the central wall in the Arthur when some of our fans moved back as the fighting kicked off. That was not fun although, the site of a Brummy penguin on a stretcher was my most abiding memory. That was comedy gold. Oh and the fact that we demolished them 4-1. Mustn't forget that.

It was indeed nasty in the corner of the Arthur ...Punches and kicks coming from all sides and I remember people being pulled up into the seats above to try and escape the mayhem !!....Even when it settled down in the second half it went off again for a while in the seats in the Arthur and like your penguin on a stretcher it was a bit weird seeing Adolf Hitler along side a clown throwing punches !!!

I cant believe that was the eighties, god I am getting old. Remember the penguin, was one sight I never thought I would see at a match.

As for rivalry, it will always be Brighton for the old rivalry as the new fluffy Brighton is just plastic supporters who are really only there for premier league matches and will disappear very quickly when relegated. Any set of fans that have ever dared use clappers in my eyes is an insult. Leicester another team who in the days of Filbert Street were a lively bunch(the 'babes' were pretty nasty) and yet now they have those poxy clappers ever week!

And one other rivalry has to be that scummy disgrace of a club, Millwall who just thrive on their reputation and will always be a nasty little club with vile support who have no interest in football on the pitch and only what goes on off it.

Some people are like Slinkies … not really good for anything, but you can’t help smiling when you see one tumble down the stairs.

I was around in the 80s. It was nasty at times. Fans that went for a punch up did go tooled up at certain games but rarely got in the ground with weapons but stashed them nearby for after the game.
Even then they tended to go after like minded fans of the opposition who were keen on a punch up.
Palace never really had a 'firm'. Very few clubs did.
Some Millwall hooligans liked to try and bully Palace fans but I never saw anyone threatened with a weapon. In or out of the stadium.

All that side of it is a load of childish rubbish anyway.
I despise Spurs, Chelsea, West Ham fans for the size of their mouths, Liverpool, Man United fans for following a 'big club' when often said fan has never been to Liverpool/Manchester. I hate Watford because they sing only when the are winning and their team is full of thugs and I hate Brighton simply because they are obsessed with everything Palace has ever done and their fans (that I've met) are like whiney little girls.

bulls***

All this ‘we hate Watford’ sentiment!

It’s based on jealousy nothing else. They’re a soppy club with soppy fans ... there’s no rivalry to be had! Get a grip ...

I hate their fans ,the way they play, the way they bring in players from their parent club, pretty sure they hate us too, maybe not rivalry as such, but getting that way.

I was in the middle of the holmesdale and could see everything. It looked like there was going to be another Hillsborough..... Thank god it wasn't. Bloody thick Brummies...

I'm not sure about that but even though I'm a big chap, it certainly made you realise how helpless you are in a real crush.
Fortunately, in that instance, it didn't last too long.

I must admit I am developing a disdain for Watford. Probably overly self-righteous but I see us far superior to them and they act like little upstarts but in reality they have generally performed better than us some how. I really do not rate them, a lot like Wolves, bit of a mystery.
