Possibly. A better course may have been to ride the tide of leftist populism and then clear out the rubbish when the party was forced to reform after a GE mauling.

Unfortunately with Brexit looming they probably felt they did not have the luxury of time.

As others have said a pointless gesture that served only one purpose - to oust 7 rebels without corbyn having to fire a shot. Can you imagine the obedient little trots who are going to replace them?

Probably agree with this.

As for replacements in those safe seats? Any idiot in a red hat. Their predecessors grew complacent and lost self awareness.

Someone of the ilk of Abbott or Lammy will take the seat, willing idiots.

Yep, this is no gang of four......At that point the grass roots of the Labour party wasn't as far left as it is now.

If they were serious about fighting to re-claim the Labour party from the Marxists.......Well, it's pretty late in the day.....once Miliband stuck Corbyn on the ticket....which was a decision I agreed with because he represented a significant wing of the party....the non Marxists in the party have been out of power.

That's a fair reflection of their party base and is democracy in action.

These seven MPs are Blairites......Them leaving will be rocky for Corbyn in the short term but ultimately I see it strengthening him in the party internally.

Pretty much.

The Blairites may have less fruit in their cake......but are also probably less honest than Marxists......to give a more savory analogy.....how much soy do you want? A bit of bean or the whole field.

Exactly, this simple fact is hard for remainers to accept.

The majority of those eligible to vote didn't vote to leave as around 27% didn't vote, add that to those who voted remain means that a majority of the total electorate did not vote to leave. (I'm not saying how the 27% would have voted just that they didn't vote leave).

Democracy is not about 100 percent participation or not giving legitimacy under some participation metric.

If people do not want to vote that is a valid commentary in of itself. Some people has zero interest in the political.

Saying that a majority didn't vote to leave is no more valid that saying a majority didn't vote to remain.

Democracy is about the majority viewpoint to presented arguments winning from a vote.

A majority who voted did vote to leave compared to those voting to remain and finding out that metric was the purpose of the referendum.

It is still true to say a majority of those eligible to vote did not vote to leave and that is a fact as is a majority of those eligible to vote did not vote to remain.

So what? The reverse is also true.

Most of the laws of this land..... most of what constitutes how your life runs....you didn't vote for or get a say on.

At least there was an opportunity with this.

Johhno is correct though when you consider that whole-hearted consent was required in the first referendum to remain in the common market, and to be consistent this test should have applied in the 2016 vote.

As it was not done, it has led to a nation divided.

Perhaps Wilson realised that, an extremely capable politician.
