I was a heavy smoker for 40 years smoking 40 a day until I switched to small cigars but still managed to get through 15 of them a day.

I packed up about 15 years ago saying on New Year's Eve that I would give up that night and at the end of the next year I actually had money in the bank for the first time ever and have done ever since.

When calculating how much smoking costs you every year you need to add back the income tax that you've paid on your earnings in order to see how much you have to earn to pay for your habit

As you say, it's a pointless habit but a drug nevertheless that is difficult to give up once hooked

Did you smoke for 40 years , then switch to cigars, which you gave up 15 years ago. ? If so , you are Roy Hodgeson, or his older brother and I claim my 10 pounds.

Such tolerance. What about those awful people who drink beer? Or pollute the atmosphere with their horrible cars? Or the million or so terrifying thugs who go to football matches? Let’s ban everything.

Could be why Rodgers left Celtic.

Yes like Midland I used to smoke 40 (60 & more If I was drinking) but quit 18 years ago. Funny part about it is If I had known it was going to be that easy I would of quit ages before that.
When you are deciding on which airline to use because they allow you to smoke you know you're addicted.
I feel the big breweries are to blame in part, by knocking boozers into drinking halls cramming in as many punters in as they can to the detriment of when you had a public, lounge or snug.
They could of at least kept one of those bars foe smokers

It’s also strange how all the people who previously didn’t go to pubs because they were too smoky still don’t go. Ironically my local has two log fires which belt out more smoke than a squadron of beagles on duty frees.

The Pub has lost its appeal. People split their leisure time amongst different activities.

Are you talking about the same smokers that bring in about £12bn in tax revenues???

Don't waste your time with jealousy. Sometimes your ahead, sometimes your behind, the race is long. But in the end it's only with yourself!!

Yes, which just covers the cost of the associated health care.

I've deleted a few posts and would be grateful if the usual suspects didn't try and bring every thread down to the gutter level

The smoking profit and loss argument is one that I doubt will ever reach a conclusion as it's easy to ascertain the tax income from smoking but almost impossible to get to a true picture of the costs
