I was a heavy smoker for 40 years smoking 40 a day until I switched to small cigars but still managed to get through 15 of them a day.

I packed up about 15 years ago saying on New Year's Eve that I would give up that night and at the end of the next year I actually had money in the bank for the first time ever and have done ever since.

When calculating how much smoking costs you every year you need to add back the income tax that you've paid on your earnings in order to see how much you have to earn to pay for your habit

As you say, it's a pointless habit but a drug nevertheless that is difficult to give up once hooked

40 years is a long stint. I take my hat off to you for managing to stop, you've done your bank balance and health the world of good. The general view out there appears to be that from an addiction standpoint, if you can give you smoking you can give up just about anything.

I've always found it fascinating how some end up having an 'enough is enough' moment and against all the odds manage to quit there and then.

I smoked for around 35 years, but gave up when I was 49 as I didn't want to be a 50+ smoker. If anyone ever asks me, I say that if someone gave me back all the money I spent on booze, I'd probably spend it all on booze. But if someone gave me back all the money I spent on smoking, I'd probably also spend it all on booze!

I try not to be around smokers because of inhaling the smoke and the smell. Also difficult is those smokers standing in pub / shop doorways that I want to enter. It also looks untidy/ messy? Wish there were other places they could go for their habit. Of course I’m a non smoker and love the fact I can be in places without those around me smoking. Outside concerts are also a pain when around smokers as it means I have to move. I do realise though that people enjoy smoking / it’s a habit so it’s not easy for them when out and about. I suppose in this day and age smoking should be banned anywhere as it’s so dangerous for your health and perhaps one day it will? I’m just rambling and not having a go at smokers.

I'm not exactly sure about the stats, but I would suggest walking down a busy road every day, with all the exhaust fumes, is a whole lot worse for your health than the 20 seconds or so it takes to walk past a smoker in a doorway of a pub/venue.

It has always amused me that some of the worst for berating us smokers are mothers of small children. They also get very upset when you point out to them that pushing their sprog around in a buggy every day, with the little darling's head at exhaust pipe height is almost certainly considerably worse for junior than one's passing cigarette smoke.

I will admit to being a smoker, albeit a small time offender!
I smoked regularly from an early age, until my wife got pregnant, I was 27.
I then gave up completely until I turned 40, divorcing and out quite a bit. I found myself gravitating to the women outside smoking, and so started full time myself.
I did this for about 3 years, and just stopped one day.
I now only smoke when I am out and drunk with people who also smoke, yes so I can bum smokes.I will only buy a pack if I am away with smoking mates, mainly because they get p*ssed off with me nicking theirs.
I will normally smoke around 3 or 4 a month on average, but can go months without smoking.
A lot of my friends hate the way I can take or leave smoking. Some ask why I don't just give up.
My answer, I bloody enjoy it. Well at the time anyway. Don't particularly like the death breath in the morning.
It does make me feel worse the morning after drinking than just drinking does.

It's a funny thing because I as good as grew up in some of these smoke filled pubs but at the time I didn't even think twice about it. I'm glad the law changes though. We're hardly a very health focused country with our diets nowadays, and so anything thats good for health is good for society.

I don't smoke much - a few rollies a day. However, I still can't give up. Amazingly addictive. I find I smoke twice as much whilst drinking.

I'm sure you could in the right set of circumstances but for some the trade off isn't worth it. The best path is of course not to start in the first place but then after the fact that advice becomes useless.

On the subject of drinking and smoking, 'social smokers' are an interesting bunch, because as you say smoking is very addictive. I used to think the whole idea of 'social smoking' was some kind of myth but it turns out there really are those who only smoke when they're out for a few drinks.

It’s obviously never occurred to you that smokers might be tired of being the only group (apart from those suspected of having any right wing opinions) open for insults and vilification in a world where everyone is apparently entitled to respect.
