As a landlord, I'd like the right to check. I've never had to as the issue hasn't arisen. You'd want to check everyone has the right to be there and the ability to pay the rent.

Plus, isn't it taking housing stock away from those with the right to live here?

Can't imagine it's a huge problem though, just one the left and right blow out of all proportion for political gain.

I think that is fair. When I worked at M&S a number of people were sacked because it turned out their visas were fakes. I am not sure how a landlord is expected to know that when a multinational didn't.

I know in many countries you have to register if you are not a citizen maybe that should be the way we go?

Well the fact is that government has lots of tools to monitor and registration is one of them. Question is how efficient they use this. My nationality required to register to police thus when i came to UK, i had to register and need to give an official update to police station when my visa type changed and / or when my address changed. But i know for some reason there are exclusions for some nationalities.

I'm a landlord and property developer.

I have recently finished converting a derelict pub in Manchester into lovely flats which now home nice families that all needed places to live. And all by the way rented at slightly below market value rents.

Does this make me a parasite?

I can't work out who is being discriminated against as the landlords are being asked to check the credentials of everybody.

Perhaps Border Control should be stopped from asking to see peoples' passports too as that must also be discriminatory

It's a total nightmare for landlords. They don't really understand the various rule relating to rights to work for people with non EU passports. So they just avoid taking any non-EU tenants. This has caused me problems in trying to place employees who are working short-term in the UK.

What a spectacularly dumb post, I am flabbergasted.

Does that mean that 54% of Germans are having their blood sucked? And 33% of Brits. No, it's a market pure and simple. If it worries you then move to Croydon where landlords have to register and are controlled.

Anyway, get over it. Renting is the new home-owning since the older generation totally destroyed the future of its juniors.

I think it's like any area of life, you get the good and the bad. I've definitely rented from principled landlords before. I'd say that estate agents are often worse than actual landlords. A middleman pulling random changes out of their arse half of which you aren't even legally obliged to pay.

Obviously not as renting is an economic/personal choice in Europe and has been for many many decades. A well trodden path.
The 'new breed' of landlords in the UK though are bloodsuckers, pure and simple.

Apart from episodes of Rogue Landlords, have you got any evidence to back this up?

Yep, life.
I see a social choice across Europe (that includes Germany) that has been present for decades but what i see growing in the UK is many many taking advantage of those less fortunate.
The initial blame lies with the banks and their distribution of funds given to them, but equally those who've taken advantage are, imo, parasites.

Having someone else less fortunate than you paying your mortgage when they could easily afford their own is wrong imo.

I don't lose sleep over it but is this really the way forward?
