I suspect that a chunk of this is as much about gaining contracts and smoothing political wheels, rather than outright charity with no strings attached.

LOL Look who Labour's spokesman is (sorry person) or was. And for the record mate, my view is more in line with a huge swathe of the country.
No one minds foreign aid if it's going to those who badly need it, It's when It's lining the pockets of Despots like Robert Mugabe & other itinerant scumbags I get pissed off.

no worries, you're not the only who buys into the current populism politics

It's the never-fails magic formula. Take any issue, add an anti foreigner flavour to it, create the divisions between people / societies / nations and bobs your uncle you've got their votes. It put Trump in the whitehouse and it's here in all it's glory.

I rarely venture onto news/politics section but I totally agree with David Lammy. I dont watch comic relief. I find it totally "look at me look at me " and generally nausiating apart from the football related sketches.
I am however happy for part of our GDP to go towards foriegn aid, but I would like it to be better supervised in the way its spent.
I also think Bob Geldof is an arsehole. As is Bono. Try paying your taxes like the rest of us.

I agree with most of what you say here really, in that what Comic Relief can achieve is limited and there's the aspect of 'I've done my bit this year then' to it, rather than either an ongoing caring about the plight or others or not.

Where I think you might disagree with him a little though, is the racial side. If it had been Lenny Henry recorded a piece for Comic Relief, I doubt Lammy would've publicly said anything, or at least wouldn't have made race an issue, so I do think that aspect of it was unfortunate.

I can’t stand David Lammy. This is Stacey Dooley he’s talking about. No matter what you might think of her, she’s as caring and genuine as you can get. There was something he said regarding Grenfell that went too far when really it’s the regulation that was at fault in whichever way you view it plus some out of touch and insensitive local councillors.

Nigeria has been independent for nearly 60 years - and you only need to look at last weeks presidential election to see how deep the corruption is.

You only need to open your inbox more like.

You couldn't be more wrong. The generosity is what stands out for me. Just this week I've been offered several million pounds by Nigerian royalty.

That said, I would. So damn would.

She is very genuine with her humanitarian concern, I promise you.

As soon as I earned enough money that meant I wasn’t skint near the end of the month I started giving to Action Aid because I wanted to do my bit to help an innocent child with education etc rather than an adult who I wouldn’t know their history or effort.
