Yep I agree with you about the rub of the green but I think we did the same at leicester recently. It can happen in football that the team being battered can still win with their few chances. I think we needed a different formation. Benteke came on and although Im not a fan of his we still didnt hoof it up to him or get crosses over ?

At one point, near the end of the match, a ball came across the goal, about 6 yards from the line and something like 1 foot above Benteke....... the commentators reaction - Oh that's just too high for Benteke to get.......

Even at my age, I could jump 1 ft off the ground if need be!

We can make as many excuses as we like about they should have had a player sent off, they were overly physical, they scored with their only shots etc.
The fact is we were not good enough and have not been good enough all season at home.
Roy’s way of playing at home doesn’t seem to suit any striker.
Batshuayi had nothing set up for him yesterday and doesn’t look the sort of player to create something for himself as he’s a poacher.
But even when we’ve tried Benteke, Ayew or Wickham the service has still been poor.
There seems to be a myth building around the amount of chances we create at home as I can only recall Burnley and Cardiff where we created lots of chances.
We missed the odd chance against Southampton, Newcastle, Watford , Chelsea and Brighton but have not really carved them open.
At home , where we can’t counterattack, we are very easy to defend against and I don’t see this changing under Roy as he won’t change his approach.
Somebody told me we have scored 7 goals in open play at home this season which sounds shocking if correct.
Our free kicks and corners are useless and leave us vulnerable to counterattack.
Roy will not take any responsibility and when asked about the poor quality in the display yesterday he just said , ‘ that’s down to individuals.’
Yes, the players are responsible too , but ultimately he is the manager and is accountable for tactics, how we set up, changes during the game and motivation.
He may have had over 40 years in the game but this does not necessarily make him right when he goes into games with an unbalanced midfield of Luka, Mcarthur and Schlupp ( leaving out Kouyate).
Or where he insists on having both Kelly and Ward on the bench at home at the expense of a winger ( Sako), if we do need to try something different.
I’m not saying this on the back of yesterday’s result and have felt this way for some time.

Good post. Another woefully depressing home display. I'd love to see Bak Sak out there or at least onm the bench as he offers a different threat - more crosses and a strong shot. Why do we need two defenders on the banch every game especially as his favourite Schlupp could drop back if necessary? We need Meyer playing at home as there is no creativity in midfield. Do they practice free-kicks on corners in training? Sorry, but as nice a guy as RH probably is, he is a boring manager.

Need to take a look at Soton 2nd goal. Midfielder belting along with the play, earning a free kick (and possible red card with another ref) which they score from. No side ways passing mids there and a decent dead ball taker. Two areas we are weak in. Lots to do in our attacking presence over the pre season if we survive.

Kouyate does that but didn't get picked!!!!!

I was going to mention this. He is the one player who has the ability to drive 10 yards into the space in front of him thus opening up various new passing angles / options. Why he doesn't start is beyond me.

Aside from winning the penalty. Andros had a shocker of a game. So did Batshuayi. Don’t think I’ve ever yelled at my TV that loud whenever Bats and his first touch let him down.

Batshuayi is woeful at football save one important thing. Everyone knows it. No point saying it.

RLC used to do this as well. With him in the midfield and Cabaye last season about this time we did the Weed in a blistering 1st half. Our midfield yesterday was definitely weaker in terms of attacking threat than last year. As you say Kouyate can fill this role. If Meyer isn't going to play then we need another attacking midfielder who can take a decent free kick/corner. A cursory glance at the goal differences in the league table tells you that our defence is really solid and whilst there is a question mark over attack, until the midfield starts producing attacking threat then it is hard to judge. Some goals have to come from somewhere and they are not coming from free kicks or corners at the mo. If goals come from this direction perhaps a more calm and relaxed feeling will happen with our goal scoring chances.

The one player we really missed yesterday was Sakho. For most of the game Dann and Tomkins were under no pressure when they were on the ball, where as most teams would have 1 attacker putting the central defenders under pressure. Brighton just put the attacker behind the ball meaning when we tried to pass forward it was trying to find 1 of 8 palace players been marked by 10 Brighton players. Sakho though can usually either find the pass or have the confidence to take the ball forward and in doing so drag the one of the 2 spare Brighton players out of their marking zone. This would have then made it a bit easier for the midfielders and forwards to find space. Dann and Tomkins played it safe and stayed back and it made it easy for Brighton.

A few times he flicked it behind him without looking? None of them went to our player. Just needed to control it and lay it off.
But he’s the only one that can finish.
Still so f*vked off with saturdays performance.

It would help if one or two of those players actually moved and tried to loose their marker instead of just standing there waiting for the ball to come to them.
