Bizarre suggestion. We have 3 centre backs total at the moment, none of whom will really step forward to give an extra man in midfield. Wilf should not be playing up front, he should be wide with Andros on the other side. What Roy should have done yesterday was play Meyer in the central 3, or go with two sitting midfielders and Meyer behind the striker.

Roy is not operating with the set of players that he wants. He doesn't want Meyer, but there's a disconnect with the scouting team so that's who he was given rather than a proper replacement for RLC.

You know this for an undeniable fact? Examples, sources please.

It wouldn’t surprise me.

Not sure it matters to the Roy out let's get someone foreign in Brigade.
Would have been a big risk to change formation so radically for a game like this. I don't think we've got the personnel or frankly the ability to successfully switch systems. Even FDB realised that a Kelly/Dann/Tomkins combination would not work as these players would really struggle to get out wide when required and struggle to bring the ball out of defence.

I think we pressed forward fairly well in the game. Our passing was poor and we didn't get he ball forward quickly enough, not the formation that was wrong. Looked like 6 in midfield most of the game. We could have gone all out and started with two strikers but given our finishing ability, I suspect Brighton would have outscored us.

So for me at home, our problems for me are:
Lack of quality shooting from outside the box.
Poor short and long passing.
Not enough movement from the forwards.
Midfield not getting ahead of the striker.
Slow passing
Free kicks and corners.

With packed defences, free kicks and corners are the commonest route to goal and we have had none of this (apart from Pens). I think the team need to do more prep/practice, vary the taker and get more variations into our set-plays.

Some good points made but part of my opening OP was that as a Ptem club and coupled with Roy’s 40 years of experience we ought to be capable of switching formations and with ease. Training should accommodate this. We are at present so limited in this area which, must also be frustrating for the players. I would repeat that I am not in the Roy Out camp but want more flexibility.

I really wish we could take a decent corner. We get so excited and applaud when we win a corner, really? I moan coz I wonder if we can hit it past the first defender. The low fizzing corners invariably get headed like a bullet away out of the danger zone and then the opposition push out and opportunity lost. Loft one up with a bit of height and less speed and the ball might even stay in the box for at least the chance of a 2nd effort?

Palace were always dangerous at corners, now we cannot make a decent contest. Rant over

Well the alternative is that Roy really wanted Meyer but now that he's at the club, he realises he doesn't want him after all.

Meyer obviously isn't the type of midfielder that Roy wants for him system, that's why he doesn't play. Thinking back to last season's January transfer window, when Roy clearly did not want Rakip or Jach and made a point of not playing them, I don't think it's unreasonable to suggest that there's a disconnect between the scouting department and the manager. I really do think the Meyer signing was a case of 'Ooh, here's an exciting young German international on a free, what an opportunity - let's sign him up!'
Only for him not to be played in any of the matches where he's the obvious choice (Wolves home, Newcastle home, Brighton home)...

So just about every aspect of our forward play then. Makes you wonder what they do in training every day.
Oh wait, it must be practicing passing sideways and backwards very slowly...and practice makes perfect..

If so why did we play a back 4? Surely wouldnt a 3-5-2 formatoimisen have been far more beneficial and attack minded without sacrificing our defensive duties. We would have no doubt one the midfield, given us the width so badly needed in order to get balls into the box and given their 2 Centre backs something to think about. The midfield having Kouyate and Meyer included this giving us the balance of toughness and flair, so badly missing yesterday.
My team would have been......
Guaita

Dann
Tompkins
Kelly

Wan-Bissaka
Luka
Meyer
Kouyate
Schlupp

Zaha
Batman

We are too much of a one trick Pony at home and so predictable.and with it so easy to play against. I have to saa yesterday reminded me of England home ganes under Roy...... clueless!

So we move zaha inside away from where he does all his damage and drop the hard working class act that is Townsend.

My point is that simply changing formation is not the answer. We seem to buy a lot one-dimensional players, perhaps that is all we can attract or afford, I don't know. All I do know is, switch formation and we lose, that's our experience over the 6 years in the prem. Agree with all we've got to try something different.

Newcastle got their result by switching to long ball after half time. Perhaps we need to go more direct at home, at times, with a 4-4-2 (not a million miles from the usual formation but a small adjustment to the personnel) and accept it wont be pretty. That would mean Benteke and Bats up front which would give us a whole new set of problems.

I said on another thread that if Roy plays one up top against Huddersfield and we don't get a result this is not acceptable.

Either 3-5-2 or 4-4-2 against the worst team in the league is the way to go.

4-3-3 against the likes of Man City and Arsenal yes.

But not Huddersfield.

3-5-2 Is not an attacking shift at all

I think that Townsend may have been carrying an injury because he wasn’t on his usual game which, as you say is about hard work. We clearly have to do something different at home to unlock mass defences and moving Zaha up is part of it.
