He never shys away though. And does lead from the front.

Agree. He’s a defensive midfielder, and not a bad one.
What are the other midfielders doing, and as captain why isn’t he telling them what to do ?

f***ing ludicrous. He took a kicking yesterday and laughed it off. He was also cool under pressure and handled the responsibilities of the penalty (as ever). He’s a fine captain. I get being angry about yesterday but this isn’t the place to vent. The issue was a turgid central midfield display with most of the fault at the doorstep of Schlupp, Macca and Andros who conceded possession constantly.

It's not f@cking ludicrous. Luka is a decent enough player but he does not have any physical presence about him. Jedi could not run with the ball, his passing was sh@t and he had limited ability, but boy did he put himself about. Luka has some good qualities but Casual makes some good points.
Yesterday Luka was out muscled and that hasn't been the first time.

Seems I'm in the minority, but I completely agree with the original post.

He's a good player, but not a captain. He got crunched early yesterday and rolled over. A derby game where someone has done you and the ref is letting stuff go and you don't retaliate with a hard challenge of your own? Embarrassing. I also think he's left Wilf completely unprotected all season. He's got the right to get in the ref's face as Captain but doesn't. He should've had a lot more yellows for studding people in retaliation for what Wilf has been getting and as for letting Deeney come onto our pitch after what happened at Vicarage road and what he said after? Captain to Captain that should've gone off in the tunnel let alone on the pitch.
We're seen as soft, you can tell if only by yesterday. Kick'em hard and you won't see them all game, that's what the opponents have sussed.

When I look at the squad Dann is the obvious captain material but he isn't a first teamer.

I dunno, I'm not sure he's vocal enough and he didn't seem to thrive when Pardew bestowed it on him. Nobody really jumps out, but if pushed I'd go with Tommo.

First and foremost a captain has to have the respect of his players which, I believe he has. Whilst it would be nice to see some outward signs of this, it is not in my opinion a key requirement. The players respect is.
I agree that yesterday needed to see passion for that game given the occasion but and with particular reference to Luka he took one hell of a kick which, would have put any lesser person out of the game and of course that was Brighton’s/ Knockaerts intentions. How he held himself together for what was the full 90 minutes when clearly in pain was a tremendous testament to his commitment and strength of purpose. There must be nothing worse when you see a player get up and stay on when you have well and truly pole axed him plus smile!!
My concern is that he doesn’t impose himself on refs (verbally) in the way that Roy Keane did and protect the likes of Zaha.
My overall opinion of the mood of the players yesterday was that they just didn’t look up for it which, extended to the crowd. Was it complacency or frustration at Roy’s tactical rigidity?
My conclusion - very unfair to call out Luka as a poor captain and let’s all hope that his tes**cles are still in one piece!

Is he. When he took a corner did he get the ball and raise his hands up to get the Palace fans going ? Did he f*ck.
he put his head down, no interaction with the fans and chipped in a corner with back spin aiming at no one..
He’s good enough to be in the eleven , never a leader.

Wtf are you going on about mate? He is supposed to do a jig every time he takes a corner? How about some pom poms?

This must be a wind up.

He takes sh*t corners but that has nothing to do with his chops as our skipper.

You’ve never seen. Hughes, thomas , jedinak, Gazza, Adams, Terry, Gerrard , Robson , Keane, etc raise their hands or beat their chest with their fist and raise their hand to the crowd when the ball goes off the pitch in a big game?
He hasn’t got enough about him to lead a group of men.
Fair enough. He was probably listening to garage music on his beats headphones like the rest of our lot as the Brighton players were celebrating with their fans on our pitch at the end.

Well Casual, how can you come up with such a ridiculous post to start with?
Beyond me! And I am more than happy with our present captain any given matchday!

Don’t mind him as a player, but we lacked guts on Saturday and he just let the game and occasasion pass him by. Needed someone to sort everyone out and he never.

This is a poorly executed screengrab of Luka geeing up the fans after his penalty. Since you seem to insist he plays cheerleader as well as leading by example and showing passion (which he clearly does). Not only am I seething at the nonsense in this thread you’ve now made we have to go back through “highlights” to illustrate a point.

Have to say that Luka is one of my favourite players atm. I thought he has proved such a coup since he came here.

He's a 6"+ serbian, playing holding midefield, he's a technically good player, can read the game well and of course he can take a penalty and score on top of that. I don't have any concerns about him as a player apart from his set pieces being poor this season (I'm sure he can do better) and earlier on in the season where he kept getting caught in possession, often leading to goal scoring opportunities if not goals (he seems to have become more aware of that and it has become a rarity).

I was happy when he was named captain, I think he leads by example and is probably our most intelligent footballer. However I honestly think Luka is a very likeable player and that is not what we needed on Saturday and I think what some people are getting at here.

You need someone who's a bit of a cvnt sometimes: who opposition fans hate, who hits players hard and sometimes dirtily, hassles the referee, winds up the opposition and who screams at team-mates, not Luka's style at all. I've always hated the 'he'll f@€king murder ya' chant, simply because it doesn't fit!

We could either have a captain like Luka, or a cvnt captain in the mould of Keane, Deeney or someone like that. Either of those types can play captain, just some days suit them better than others.

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!
