Utter dross. whatever happened to the tricky Palace that had distinguished brand football and spirit. So shameful Roy has instilled this we will roll over and they can have us lying face down. With no grease attitude. Football has evolved well ahead of the aptitude of Roy Im afraid. I count more than 65% of games we lost this season due to management shortcomings. Wrong tactics, late changes, wrong squad picked. Thats a fact. Roy will never change. And if palace is to become more than a rinky dinky club that has been surpassed by watford, brighton and other sides - it needs a forward looking manager. Period.

You cannot play long ball to Michi, he cannot hold it up. Ayew holds it up far better. The best we have as he can win headers is Benteke.

Sorry Rachid Rachid Rachid (thats a lot of Rachids) but how is pointing this out clutching at straws?

If pointing out that Benteke is a better target man/hold up player than Batshuayi makes you fall off your chair, you must be quite bruised. Do you fall off your chair when someone says Brexit aint going too well so far? Pretty obvious stuff.

If you are going in to this game, with the intention of launching attacking chances via a long ball to a target man, you play a f&cking target man.

Roy is a confused fool sometimes he truly is.

Benteke is a good header of a ball yes but target man no. Lacks the strength movement work ethic and intelligence.

If he’d been picked ahead of Batshuayi Roy’s sanity would have been equally questioned an£ the ball would have come back just as many times.

I'm not going to defend tonight's performance, it wasn't good by our standards.

Would have liked to have seen us go for it a bit more, especially at 1 nil. Puzzled as to why Roy didn't make the changes then, giving the likes of Tekkers and Andros a bit more time to get into the game.

Perhaps if Roy had gone for it a bit more, we would have got something from the game, but we could just as easily have been picked off and lost by more. Is it better to lose 3 nil while "going for it" versus being cautious and losing 2 nil? I don't know.

There have been a few flat performances this season. A few very good ones too. But is this really enough of a reason to call time on Roy, because we haven't been 'that great' this season?

Would Palace fans really be that much happier with a younger, more attacking "forward-thinking" manager? Let's say, for arguments sake, we got someone in like Eddie Howe...

I mean look at Bournemouth's away results at the top 6:

Chelsea 2 Bournemouth 0
Man City 3 Bournemouth 1
Spurs 5 Bournemouth 0
Man Utd 4 Bournemouth 1
Liverpool 3 Bournemouth 0
Arsenal 5 Bournemouth 1

Pretty bad results for a more "adventurous" style of football. Would we be happy with these kinds of score lines?

I think it just underlines how tough it is for us smaller premier league clubs. Do you stick or twist? Roy tends to be more cautious at times, but we rarely get spanked. Our goal difference isn't bad at -5, considering where we are in the table. But at the same time, you could argue that Bournemouth's play is generally a bit more entertaining, even if they get spanked a few times. End result is we'll probably finish on a similar points total to Bournemouth like last season (even though we played for half a season without a recognised striker). In my view that's not too bad for a club like palace. Relative safety.

Parish and board will probably stick, rather than twist, and keep Roy. I personally don't think it's that bad, he's a safe pair of hands, we're unlikely to get relegated with him as boss. Might even improve a bit next season, given a bit of backing to improve the overall squad.

But if we twisted and did change the manager, who would we get? Eddie Howe probably wouldn't come to us. Others like Lampard and Wagner have been mentioned as being possible options, in a similar vein to Howe. Are they safe pairs of hands or quite a big gamble?

What about others? Southampton managed to get Ralph Hasenhüttl. He's being praised for turning them around this season. Yet their form in 2019 is really no different to Palace under Roy (although Ralph does thump his chest like Klopp, perhaps that's all fans want these days). Could we attract someone similar, with a growing reputation? E.g. Mark Van Bommel is doing a good job at PSV, would he be a good option? Would he give up champions league to come to Palace? Even if he did, look what happened when we got FDB, another manager who had done well in the dutch league.

There's really no magic wand for this.

Hats off.Very good post.

It would appear that Hodgson, like Allardyce,Pulis etc is part of the "Guarantees survival" club where the football is not that entertaining but the ends justifies the means.

One cannot envisage any change in style if Hodgson is still in charge next season.

Plenty of people post a lot

Mostly I agree with Maine Eagle. Leaving aside the Benteke point. Failing to make changes early enough was suicidal. The game was crying out for Townsend too. AWB tried to get forward but he isn’t the type to go it alone. I would also have used Meyer for his energy and directness towards the end of the game

Dont play Benteke expecting goals. Roy has long since coached that out of him.

But if you want to play long balls to break out, play someone who can hold it up and is good in the air.

What did Michi do today exactly?

Again, all the experienced managers who post here under different names are sounding off as if they know what they're talking about.

If you feel the need to insult Roy then add something about your own qualifications, no problem with disagreeing but pathetic you call him stupid etc

CLEAR?

We were truly dreadful tonight. Absolutely awful. We all know Tottenham have better players, but I wasn't expecting them to outmuscle us and win the majority of 50/50s. The midfield are slow, ponderous and appear only capable of passing sideways or back. Everyone around me was screaming for Roy to change things once Spurs went 1-0 up, but as usual he did nothing. The football served up by Roy this season is dreadful - I would rather go down trying to entertain the fans than watch another season of this garbage.

cJust got home from the game.

To get some perspective, we have been beaten away from home by a top 6 team. And not thrashed either.

But it was the manner of the defeat that was disappointing. I thought we did well to still be level at half time because Spurs were playing some decent stuff. Survive for the 10-15 mins of the 2nd half and they could become frustrated. But having conceded on 55 mins, that was the time for Roy to gamble and try something different and he didn't do it.

I've staunchly defended Roy on here against some ( in my opinion ) unwarranted criticism, but the timing of the substitutions was wrong tonight.

To me the sideways/back passing is the most annoying bit. We play ourselves into trouble with this careful obsession.
Guess Spurs has backed off the potential buyers of WZ/AWB after this horror show (except the last 7-8 minutes when we had a go).

Roy is not God.

He doesnt make the right decision every time. He thought Harry Kane taking corners was a good idea.

He was a s*** England manager.

His idea of integrating a new foreign signing into the team is piss poor.

Playing long ball, to a player who cannot win headers or hold the ball up, and then waiting until you are 2 nil down with 10 mins left to actually get men forward, is f&cking dumb.

Lo and behold we didnt have a shot on target.

The stats dont lie. Whatever Roy tried to do tonight, it was an utter failure.

I dont expect to beat Spurs, I expect to have a f&cking go at it and be remotely competitive.

Roy lacks a plan B, and when he finds one, he rolls the dice far too late.

This was a poor, poor game for us. Sitting back soaking up pressure is fine, if you can hit on the break and get some counters launched, but we literally didnt launch an effective attack all game.

If you are going to try to play long ball, why the hell would you play Batshuayhi up there. Benteke or even Ayew are far superior options. Bats has no aerial skills and is not good at holding the ball up either.

Because of this we had no out ball tonight whatsoever, and Spurs knew it. Trippier was playing way up the pitch because he knew we had no way to come at them.

I am sorry but Roy must act more quickly and more decisively. Second half we were playing just as badly as the first, no shots on target, therefore when they score you simply must make a chance immediately to try to make something happen.

Defeatist apologists will say "well then you could let in a second goal, you need to consolidate, blah blah". Bollocks. We achieved absolutely no goal chances in the first 45 minutes expect a wayward Schlupp shot.

When the approach is yielding, wait for it, ZERO goal chances, you need to change. Roy was all about hooking Meyer at half time vs Huddersfield, but he waits until the game is dead and gone before making changes here.

His unwillingness to actually give substitutes some time to affect the game (except when removing Max Meyer) is insane. Its as if our game plan is to get lucky. What is Benteke going to do with that amount of time on the pitch?

When did we finally have a go at Spurs, get some players into their box, and actually take some chances?

When we were 2-0 down with 10 minutes left. What is the point?
