Which is your opinion. I disagree. I would quite happily settle for 39 points next season with 5 games to go so long as we had won a few more home games.
I would be delighted if we could actually win a cup, but whether we finish 8th or 12th doesn't really make a jot of difference

Agree with most of this.

However, where we get those points from I really don't care. Obviously be nice to get more at home, but if the first priority is to stay in the Premier League then those 39 points should achieve that.

If we have the 9th highest wage bill yet we're 13th in the table, then either we're paying them too much or they're underperforming. Probably both is true.

So if we finished 9th then that's ' performing ' ?

Yep, wage bill is probably the most reliable indicator of likely league position

So we're 2 wins and a draw away from that at the moment.

Thin dividing lines....

As a season ticket holder who infrequently travels away, it would be nice to see a few more wins at home. However it would also be nice if they could save the away wins up for when I do go

Can be skewed by frees and loans surely?

Paul Merson on sky has consistently said palace are the most underachieving team in the premiership, with a equal to anyone outside the top 6, I agree with this.

I emphatically don't agree!
On paper we have good players - in practice we have no cohesion, teamwork, ball holding skills or intelligence. I guess some manager would be able to sort this out but Roy Hodgson has proved he can't.

Hear hear ... I agree with most of the above but also believe some of our players are not as fit as they should be. They just do not work hard enough and that was very clear yesterday.

The title of this thread should actually be under performing and over paid!

I think we are under-performing and it needs a couple of changes to reverse this.

1. A centre forward that can play the lone striker role

Benteke and Batshuayi don't seem to be able to do this, whilst Wickham appears to be struggling to recover fitness.

2. A dominant creative midfielder.

I thought Meyer would be the answer, but he won't dominate games.

However, these types of players cost ££££

When I started the thread I had in mind how our performance in terms of league position compared with our relative financial clout (or lack of it). Probably 'punching above our weight?' might have been a better title.

I used attendance as a proxy for 'financial clout' and clearly it isn't a very good proxy. Someone pointed out that TV money is very unevenly distributed and also there's the question of sponsorship, money from stadium naming rights etc, etc.

I think Palace are well down the 'financial clout' table and I suspect we are truly 'punching above our weight'. The disparity in resources was crystal clear against Man City, as was pointed out on the match thread I think, any one of their players, including those on the bench, would be guaranteed starters for us and none of our players would make it into their team. That has very little it seems to me to do with Guardiola being a better manager than Roy and everything to do with the financial muscle City have.

And yet we've got the 9th highest wage bill?
