Meyer has been a disaster.

That's unfair. Jach, rakip...they were disasters. Meyer has contributed...just not as much as we all hoped for just yet, given his huge (and unfair) expectations.

He may be incredible next season - that's the way isn't it?

Basically the amortisation of our current contracts with players is being written down each year. The spending spree we had under Pardew and Allardyce, pushed us nearly in breach of FFP, spending more than you earn in simple terms.
It gets reset each year in line with your revenue and amortised contracts and wages. As we have been prudent in the last 18 months purchases and got rid of some peripheral players, we are no longer near the FFP limit.
This is a simple overlook of a very complex set of rules.

I'm not sure that's entirely accurate.

FFP is in two parts.

Part 1 is Profit and sustainability.

A club, if the owners put no money into the club, can make a loss of no more than £15m over 3 years. The owners are allowed to fund the club over the 3 year period to allow a club to make a loss of no more than £105m over the 3 year period, so in essence the owners can pump in a maximum of £90m over 3 years.

We have no issues with this.

Part 2 is where we struggle massively.

Short Term Cost Control

Essentially the club is restricted to an increase of £7m per year in wages. So if the wages this year were £70m then they can be £77m next year.

Yes we have got rid of a few fringe players like Puncheon etc. but £7m is only £134k a week.

When you factor in pay rises for say AWB, losing a few players doesn't make a huge difference. We would need to get rid of a Benteke or someone on his salary level to make a bug difference.

I think the club could spend money on transfers if it wanted, but the issue is getting enough players off the wage bill to allow us to sign those players. Having said that, the rules are if you breach STCC then you pay a fine which is a percentage of the overspend. So if we wanted to go for it and take a hit on a fine we could but obviously long term that's not a great idea.

I think our main problem is the terrible scouting record for buying from the lower leagues, If you look at Bournemouth, Wilson, King, Fraser and Brooks all bought from the lower leagues over the last 4 years at a cost of under 14million for the lot, and reasonably low wages, we should learn from this.

None of those are dudes.

I didn’t say PVA was. He hit the ground running early. He’s in very bad form though.

Schlupp is very poor value for money at a total of £14+ million, plus wages. He’s not even a jack of all trades. A trier and a decent pro, but this was not good business at all.

Meyer. Yes, maybe he might come good next season, and I defended him for months, but it’s very clear that Parish signed him seeing as Roy doesn’t rate him. However, Sorloth was, and that’s concerning too. Dud? Maybe not if playing elsewhere in Europe. Bad business again? The likelihood is that it is.

Fraser was bought from Aberdeen for £400,000 so he wasn't purchased from a club in the lower leagues in England.Been a brilliant acquisition - only 5ft 4ins and known as the "Wee man" at the club.

Add to the list Chris Mepham whom Bournemouth bought from Brentford for £12 Mill and I understand they are casting eyes in the direction of WBA defender Dara O'Shea who has been on loan at Exeter.

We don’t anymore. We were having a flick through the sticker album for several seasons and now we just buy who a club wants to sell, regardless if he fits our requirements or if the manager wants him or possibly even knows Parish thinks it’s a good business deal.

Dougie Freedman is supposed to be our DOF as well, but then again, we had Peter Taylor as manager and his experience with the English youth at the time.

Slight technicality there then because I see the SPL as a lower league and getting the signing to succeed in the Prem is as uncertain as a championship player, often more so.

I recommend Brighton’s North Stand Chat for the answer you’re after.

Dann, Ward, Mcarthur and Hennessey the last players from the lower leagues, must be 4/5 years

I'd agree with this, would also much rather have a lower league player looking to prove themselves than a premier League superstar going through the motions on 130k a week

There are a lot of good young players in the lower leagues too. Would love to see us take a gamble on any of Dru Yearwood, Andre Dozzell, Morgan Rogers, Rekeem Harper, Marcus Tavernier, Jack Clarke, Dan James and Matt O'Reilly.
