Certainly not worth making someone unemployed over.

I dunno mate, he signed his own death warrant, not sure what else the BBC could do.

I'm not PC at all, but comparing a mixed race baby to a chimp for a joke seeks like a sackable offence in any walk of life.

Not unreasonable really.

But he's saying that wasn't what he was doing. Its just what some others assume he was doing.

A silly mistake i'd say, should've realised how some would take it. But i don't think he meant it in a racist way and i don't think he's a racist person either.

He apologised that should have been the end of it unless the Royal couple had something to say about it.

In this crazy world of ours the BBC will forgive killers and drug takers but they never forgive a comment that is deemed racist.

His apology reminded me a bit of WH and his explanation of 'that' salute - "I didn't even think about it . . ." in that it was pretty unbelievable as an excuse.

That said, being offensive (by accident or design), shouldn't necessarily end a career. And - given that he's been sacked twice from 5Live - he'll likely be back in a year.

“My experience of life is that it is not divided up into genres; it’s a horrifying, romantic, tragic, comical, science-fiction cowboy detective novel. You know, with a bit of pornography if you’re lucky."

It’s a tricky one because his intention, as I understand it, was to make a comparison with circus performers but I take your point.
My suspicion is that the BBC were waiting for an excuse - he’s worked for several radio stations and no doubt will again.
Chris Rock suggested the idea of “punching up” being acceptable in comedy and “punching down” not but if making a joke about the Royal family isn’t punching up then what is?

That would be my take. I think it was a knee jerk reaction to the sycophantic OTT media coverage, I don't think he thought it through. But how can you know what's in someone's heart.

Despite the Millwall connection, I like Baker. His show is the best thing on the radio. Wouldn't be surprised if he engineered this to get out of his contract and join his pal Chris Evans

Don't think so.

A friend of mine of Nigerian origin knew Danny from when they young men and has told lots of stories none of which put Danny in a bad light.

From what my mate has told me I don't believe he is racist at all. That said I have never warmed to his radio show.

Shades of Roseanne Barr about it. Something that appears so incredibly and overtly inappropriate, that racism possibly wasn't actually in his thoughts at all. This is a bloke big in the PG Tips Monkeys in Suits era. It's certainly magnitudes more likely to me that it was a joke that completely missed the mark, than it was some wild racist attack on a baby.

Course he's saying that, do you really believe him?

The punchline is obvious, especially to a professional comedian...

Edit: I'm not saying Baker is racist in any way, he's just shown a lack of awareness. For example, I got sent a screenshot of this on WhatsApp before knowing, and didn't link the name "Danny Baker". My reaction was a guilty chuckle (in a "you can't say that" wsy) and a quick delete.

How's a paid up comedian and comedy writer missing the very obvious intent? He thought it was funny and posted it, complete ignorant to the fact that it is racist in this day and age (arguably any day and age).

There's being PC and then there's being realistic chaps.

Your the second person to say that to me this morning. Could be right? The first was a Millwall fan who loves Danny, like I said not a fan but I think it was a joke that misfired.

For a bit of context and depth, let's include a bit more of what he said

"I'm annoyingly ebullient and if you're accused of the kind of grotesque racism but you're not, you don't wring your hands. Ill advised, ill thought out and stupid but racist? No, I'm aware how delicate that imagery is."

I know he’s a millwall Cnut and he’s been an idiot for tweeting that in this day and age, how ever it was meant, but I’ve actually found a lot of his anti palace jibes quite funny over the years. ‘Horrible Crystal Palace and their thunderbirds kits’

Was his Saturday morning show any good? I never used to listen

Yeah, it is racist I'm afraid Danny.

It's comparing a mixed race baby to a chimp ffs, some things you can't backtrack on.

See my earlier edit, not saying Baker himself is a racist.
