Your the second person to say that to me this morning. Could be right? The first was a Millwall fan who loves Danny, like I said not a fan but I think it was a joke that misfired.

There's ways with a less career suicide feel about them though, surely?

That said, being offensive (by accident or design), shouldn't necessarily end a career. And - given that he's been sacked twice from 5Live - he'll likely be back in a year.

A bit like our very own racist Iain Moody was

I dunno mate, he signed his own death warrant, not sure what else the BBC could do.

I'm not PC at all, but comparing a mixed race baby to a chimp for a joke seeks like a sackable offence in any walk of life.

Not unreasonable really.

The heading over the pic said "royal baby leaves hospital", yet he said on tv he didn"t make a connection with the royal baby, i don"t think he is racist thou, just trying to be a funny cnut, but he should have known the storm it would cause! Stupid yes, racist no, wouldn"t bet against him landing up at LBC in the near future, maybe a topical music prog to go with his NME knowledge , but definately not political analysis prog!

While I understand the 'he must have known' perspective, it could equally be said that a racist joke about a royal baby was always going to implode a career and so isn't exactly something you rush to post. From PG Tips monkeys forward there's a culture of silly monkeys as humans jokes in this country that isn't in the least bit racist. All I'm saying is that the idea that he definitely meant this or that is opinion rather than the statement of fact it's being painted as.

I appreciate that it was very inappropriate though, and that it was the perfect storm to get the reaction it did.

If this was a private joke and he’s been stitched up I’d say it was racist, but because it’s so obviously racist I do think that he could’ve done it intentionally to exit his contract.

Public pictures linking a black or part black baby or person to a monkey, ape, chimpanzee or gorilla will get you what you deserve.

Again, if people called Wilf a monkey or their family member something similar then I doubt they’d be happy. You can do what you like in private but if you’re in the public eye then not this.

What a stupid statement.
So you now think that you can make sweeping moral judgments about a whole group of people just because of the football team they support?

Can anyone else smell the stench of irony?

I doubt that this was any more than a childish joke about the fascination with royal births.

It is a perplexing one because as you say it's career suicide. If he did have genuine racist intent and towards a baby too then he shouldn't be surprised by the reaction. He's currently on twitter saying he'd like to knock people out who say that's the angle he was going for, so who knows.

Fair enough, but what if (say) someone posted a photo of a chimpanzee wearing a football kit flanked by a couple of tracksuited humans and added the caption "Crystal Palace striker signs new contract". Acceptable? Funny?

Neither, but I wouldnt then demand the person be sacked either...anyone can make a mistake..if the apologise then that should be fine.

Life's too short, if we start playing the zero PC tolerance game we're ALL fooked!

I think he would do well to lay off the old Tweeting for a while. Mind you, that probably applies to most people.

For the record...I haven't commented anywhere on whether or not he should have been sacked.

...but there's the rub..that's YOUR take on it. I agree (if he's to be believed...and why wouldnt we take his explanation into account) it was ill judged, but that's all it was.

See....an innocent misinterpretation...but of course you're right YT I wasn't for one minute suggesting that is was YOU calling for him to be sacked...I was referring to those that actually DID on t***ter.

Happy to clear up the confusion my post may have inadvertently caused
