Wilf and his agent will only say he wants to leave for two reasons and the last times, it has been for a better contract.

A good journo like Fifield will have multiple sources and I imagine he would've checked what he was told with more than one of them to ensure (as far as possible) its veracity. He in turn can become a source for, for example, a well-connected fans' website.

You seem to be suggesting Wilf and his agent are stirring things up simply to get him a better contract. I tend to believe what Fifield reports, that he wants to test himself at the highest level but won't agitate for a move if no deal is struck.

Absolutely correct and the person who seems to regard himself as an expert on journalism who refuted it isn’t - despite his apparent self regard and rudeness to people who actually know the trade.

It’s no coincidence Wilf was allowed to release an interview to the press about playing CL football and a week after the season ends, it comes out he wants to leave.

Sounds like we want business done early so we can prepare for next season.

I love Wilf but the club need to think about the next 10 years, not just the next two or three. Plus, wouldn’t we all want to see Wilf rip up the champions league and reach his potential. I know I would?

I agree with all of this, especially in bold, apart from wanting to see him rip up the champions league. He may only get 2 or 3 games or sub apps anyway.

Parish has played this whole thing really well imo, keeping him here until 27, getting loads out of him, plus securing the chances of a sale at 27, apart from maybe the deal buying him back from man Utd. I’m not gutted with the fact we had to accept a sell on fee because we had to let him go there and it failing there kept him here for so long. But if the high well on fee is true then that is disappointing.

You’re also implying that the club has to sell these players at some point because if we’re going down when they’re not playing (retired, old and tired or crocked), then we may as well cash in at their peak, after we’ve got good service from them and overhaul the squad and balance the books. That I agree with. If we’re doomed without him anyway, we may as well be less doomed with some money to replace and invest/balance the books.

Progress will be how much we improve and grow the club, rather than clinging on in the Prem with £30 million players we can’t afford and hamstringing our future transfer activity, signing freebies and loans that are available but don’t fit our team in the slightest and relying on managerial genius or again, high spending that starts that next cycle of future hamstringing of transfer activity.

This sale and the AWB sale and the investment in the squad are critical to the progress and gauging the progress of the club, because until then we’ve been spending far more than we’re positioned in the league for revenue. 9th highest spenders spending most of the season in 17th. Get the sales right, balance the books and maintain the squad and it’s been great progress. Get it wrong and we’ll be a has been that spent loads to stay in the league with little to show for it.

I agree with you on Dominic Fifield though.

Journalism should never be seen as truth. It is, almost by definition as a form of media, distorting.

It's more that the best journalists are the least distorting while managing to still tell their stories in clear and compelling ways.

Football transfer journalism tends to have high distortion because it's competitive and -- due to its nature -- can be hard to disprove. So rogues can thrive.

Fifield seems a relatively good Palace/Palace transfers journalist.

On Twitter from Craig Kline, formerly Fulham Assistant Director of Football

"Zaha's agent is Will Salthouse, so the real Q is which owner wants to use the Salthouse criminal network to launder 60+ million?

Steve Parish is part of this laundering network, co-ownibf DirtyBird restaurants with Salthouse"

Clearly Kline is not afraid of a libel action.

These people have good sources and are usually right with this kind of stuff.

That makes perfect sense if it is the case and - sad for us fans though it is - it is the right way forward and the right way to do it.
Sadly though what will happen is that spurs will come in and cause aggro after they lose the Final and offer a derisory amount - you just know that Levy will do it!

We would need to sell one or both if we want to make major signings otherwise it will be loans and freebies again.

Regardless of contracts if either Wilf or AWB want to go then let them. We can't afford to pay huge wages for people who don't want to be here

If money is that short then I agree it makes sense to cash in but with Premiership status being worth about £120 million pa and Wilf being the vital player for us in recent years it doesn’t necessarily make financial sense to sell him.

Andros Townsend said on Goals on Sunday that in his opinion Wilf was happy and that AWB needed at least 1 more season at Palace before even considering a move. Of course it’s only his opinion but I thought it meaningful. I hope they both stay and serve as examples to the next influx from our academy.

Our accounts show that we are paying player wages higher than is sensible for a club of our size and income. In order to attract and keep players we have paid both high transfer fees and wages with result that our transfer activity has been reduced.

We have 2 options

Firstly keep our current sort of profile a good first 11 with players on the bench who are solid professionals but not stars.

Secondly look at selling high earners who also have a high transfer value - Zaha, Sakho and even Benteke and Meyer. Lets assume both Zaha and Sakho go and we clear a figure of just over £100 million. Both would need replacing and rest could be used to purchase slightly better squad players. Assuming we buy 4 players abd they are paid an average of 60k per week our wage bill will not reduce.

I was listening to a radio programme this week about why Fulham failed and Sam Allardyce was interviewed, his view too many new faces and not good enough. Better to have 3 or 4 good players (30 million) than 8 or 9 mediocre (15 million). I am not sure he is right but if he is we are better keeping current situation.

I think if Zaha does go we will be looking for 80k plus and possibly looking for player exchanges as part of deal. For instance if Chelsea have ban suspended Loftus Cheek,Batshuayi/Abraham moving to us plus some money
