I think its more a fear of litigation as to why they ask for ID.

I’m sure you’re right but it’s never happened to me before before - I was asked for my date of birth in California ten years ago but didn’t have to prove it. I know bar staff in America face serious consequences for serving underage drinkers but this seemed daft.

Presumably the reason airlines take so much trouble over people who are allergic to peanuts which happens on a surprisingly large number of flights. Odd that they think nothing of serving tea and coffee when turbulence could result in a burning face full of it.

My guess is to protect themselves they ask everybody that way they cannot be sued for discrimination against one group or another. Anyone who has sold alcohol in the UK will tell you that the company makes it clear it's down to you and if you make a mistake you pay the fine and any other consequences including getting fired. In other words the shops and bars wipe their hands of it. As the fine is over £100 I don't blame staff who may go over the top why should they risk it when they are hung out to dry by their employer.
Meanwhile the real culprits which are the mini markets get away it we had one in Beckenham that got done time after time and should have been closed down by the police / council. Edited by Badger11 (04 Jun 2019 10.03am)
