Considering their prices...it's very difficult to see this with good eyes.

Very good players for their ages, indeed. But why wasn;t anyone at the club to spot Maupay and Watkins before the blossomed in the Championship? If the board had been smart, they'd have been gotten by Palace years ago, when they cost a quarter their current price, raised with wan Bissaka for a while and then loaned out to play in the Championship. And now they'd have gotten back, with no charge, to play for Palace. That would have been good business.

It was likely to be a big gamble and possibly not worth it at the time. When Watkins started to emerge in Exeter's first team they went from relegation struggles at Christmas to the play-off final.... but it was league 2.

I don't know much about Maupay, so I looked on wiki. It looks as though he wasn't setting the world alight in the French lower leagues.

You could apply the same logic to Vardy or Solskjaek. Sometimes teams just strike it lucky (Ian Wright?)

I don't think we'll spend more than 10-15 million. I think we'll release some players,(3 already) and bring in 1 or 2 on a free, and 1 or 2 on loan, with maybe 1 actual buy.

If we sell someone, then that might change.

Been talking about Maupay on here for a while and would be happy to sign him. Not sure about Ollie Watkins as don't know a lot about him. Ideally I'd like to see an attacking mid dead ball specialist. Think we should be looking at £15 million a player, 3 signings with a new left back as well, assuming no major leavers ?

He was in fact. They paid 2 million for him in July 2017 after he had scored and assisted 17 in Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 in 2900 minutes until 20 years of age.

Any decent scout would have recommended to sign that player. Any sharp club President would have done it. I'm sure Maupay would have come to a PL club, even if it meant being loaned out for 1-2 years.

There's 19 other clubs in premier league and Brentford are one of 24 in the championship. Same argument could apply to about 30 clubs who could have signed him in England alone.

Scott Hogan sold for 10m

That's the exact same thing people were saying about Midtjylland when we got Sorloth from them. Everyone was praising the Danish team for finding talent for cheap and selling high to other teams.

Not that these two would be a Sorloth level fail, but it doesn't really sound like a positive.

2018 Jan. (Sako) Palace 1 - 0 Burnley
2019 May (Batshuayi, Batshuayi, OG, Van Aanholt, Townsend) Palace 5 - 3 Bournemouth
2020 Feb. (Van Aanholt) Palace 1 - 0 Newcastle

He scored 7 Ligue 1 goals in 4 seasons. Can see how he was missed by the vast majority of press clubs. 11 goals in Ligue 2 is unlikely to catch the attention of many clubs.

Okay, forget their scouts, let's nab Midtjylland's salesman and get him to shift Benteke for £50 million

Maybe we should be looking at poaching Brentford's scouting team - cheaper in the long run !

Now that would be a sensible idea. We need to be identifying these talents at source and loaning them to the likes of Brentford for development rather than handing them 15 mil "commission" every time we want to buy a player.

On the subject of Brentford's recruiting, they also have Ezri Konsa who is rated.I believe he cost £2.5 Mill from Charlton and would command a much higher fee at the present time.Konsa,Maupay and Watkins were all signed by Dean Smith.

We're talking about a player who was 17,18,19 and 20 years old in those 4 seasons you mention. Wouldn't that draw suitors?
