the whiff of tear gas

Responsibility Deficit Disorder is a medical condition. Symptoms include inability to be corrected when wrong, false sense of superiority, desire to share personal info no else cares about, general hubris. It's a medical issue rather than pure arrogance.

Hong Kong, there appears to be a rather large tumour attached to your side.

Yet more words of wisdom here from Herr Verhofstadt. Shame he doesn't feel the same about autonomous parts of Europe

Not good here but nowhere near as bad as France and Paris under the beneficial umbrella of the EU

is Hong Kong...

owned by vulture funds ?

run by politicians who ignore popular opinion time and again ?

being colonised from abroad ?

saddled with a lifetime of debt ?

witnessing the slow death of its ancient culture ?

experiencing a housing crisis of epic proportions ?

suffering from a crime epidemic ?

with a healthcare system that is a laughing stock ?

hong kong is doing far better than ireland. we would welcome China rather than the EU as our overlords. Chinese food rocks , too.

was 'hong kong garden' by siouxsie and the banshees named after the takeaway in Beckenham ?

I was in Hong Kong a couple of months ago and beautiful though it is, it's a powder keg. since China took control in 1997 there has been a steady drip of one-sided regulations including access into the old colony from the mainland but no equal right to go the other way (not that anyone would want to). The result is the most appalling overcrowding and unrest due to the forced mixing of very different cultures. These demonstrations are rooted in the fact that any discord resulting from this new hybrid society will potentially be dealt with by Chinese courts. How would you feel?

The crack (or should I say craic) seems strong in Ireland at least though

Nonsense! Another colony freed from being crushed under the heel of oppressive, white, asset stripping imperial colonialism........

Ultimately many of our problems are caused by our own government, rather than anyone elses. It's they who are endlessly procrastinating and fannying about with regard to our future direction. With Hong Kong though, there's no realistic way for them to opt out of Chinese involvement. In all likelihood after 2047 they will lose all autonomy and become a Chinese province. It's already happening, with this extradition situation and this is the agreed 'hands off' period.
