Each to their own, but I've never believed in overtime. If the firm can't pay me enough to live on in normal hours, then they're taking the piss. They don't deserve people putting themselves out to help them out when they're busier than normal and obviously raking it in.

If voluntary overtime is paying for luxuries then fair enough, but if it's just to make ends meet then there's obviously something wrong.

There's more to life than work.

But surely if you dont earn enough in the job you chose then you either chose the wrong job or are living above your means.
Many people live above their means.
I have in the past.
No one has to have a big TV or foreign holiday.

Just because a company is busy doesn't mean that they are raking it in. Carillion is a fine example of a company with a full order book yet still going bust

The problem I had with overtime was that whenever it was available the people who wanted it slowed down in regular time to create a backlog while those who didn’t want it had to pick up the slack during the day. Even more annoying was that anyone over a basic grade didn’t get paid extra; they got time off in lieu which couldn’t be taken due to pressure of work. Excellent for both productivity and morale when you’ve worked a straight 19 days.

Just seen this thread, wise words and prescient for anyone starting out.

Loyalty is misguided if it's only one way, whether it's to an individual or company.

It's sensible to always be aware of the nature of the business we are in. Economically our only worth is our value to others.

I worked on IT projects the management insisted on working Saturdays and Sundays to catch up. My staff were exhausted and I tried and failed to stop this. When you know you are working overtime you naturally slow down. It's like running a marathon you pace yourself.

You are better off working smarter than harder.

My God I was knackered and still skint.
I did depend on it tbh but now without it I'm just above the water line.
You only get
So many steps
So many breaths
So many heart beats.
Poor NDP on here.
I hope hes ok but sadly the dice rolled wrong for him.
Brutal but true.
I'm not wasting it working.

Interesting post from an interesting poster.

I feel Work is a deep rooted issue. If I look at myself for example, a self confessed workaholic.

I came from a humble background and worked my ass of for years to
better myself (whatever that means) I’m nowadays far more
comfortable however I don’t really know how to relax or switch off, in fact, I am never really happier than when working on something which, will in my eyes, push me further forward in life.

Love my kids and family etc, love Palace but I constantly feel compelled to be working on something.

You just sound like a normal bloke to me, great attitude.

If everyone was like this the world would have half its problems sorted.

Correct Cryst.

Nothing wrong with Haven for a week. Poke your foreign holidays and save the money. No need to go abroad when the weather is like this anyway, paying thousands to have Johnny foreigner slinking about, resenting our presence and over charging us. Undrinkable tap water and in some places like Greece you have to put your s*** rags in a bin ffs, animals.

Not for me. That's just a piss take, mine go straight down the u-bend. I'm not kipping in a room with a bin full of poo a few yards away, don't care if it cloggs up their 2000 year old sewer system.

That said, i am partial to Cyprus. The people are nice and aren't all lazy 'manyana' types and they drive on the left.

Do you ever have anything nice to say about anyone or anything?

I don't suppose that anyone used to British sanitation likes the Greek sewage system but it's not that bad.

We rent a villa in Kefalonia most summers and take nappy sacks with us so there is no smell or lack of hygiene.

You may not care about clogging up someone's sewage but the people we rent the villa from are a very nice couple and I would hate to land them with a substantial bill to clear out their sewage just because I couldn't be bothered to fit in with local customs
