I remember when the owners tried to be transparent with the fans and ended up getting abused on social media.

I'd rather not knowing what's going on in the background and us signing players that the media haven't been touting us with being interested in.

Just because we are 'linked' with all these players doesn't make it true.

It's the same every summer. Anticipation that we'll sign someone and checking on here everyday. Reality is we never get anyone (other than a third choice player) until about a week before deadline day at the earliest.

Would have hoped to have got out of the routine of buying players late in the window, who either need time to bed in or are unfit. We then start the season struggling. Same story every season other than the Pardew one. Would have thought those in recruitment would have learned to get players in early to try and get them to bed in. Isn't going to happen though!

Seems we have become worse that this and do have cash issues, so will be looking in the bargain bin again.

Yeah as much as I disagree with a lot of the posts and don’t see a huge problem with the transfer strategy, I think this merging and renaming is a really snarky and petty but unsurprising move from a certain moderator.

The problem is that there is too much temptation to have too many threads that are really about the same issue. I think it’s a good thing that they’re merged as much as possible because it deters, as much as it can, anyone to just fancy or keep starting multiple threads for whatever temporary satisfaction they need for their delicate well being.

Very well put RH. Merging threads on similar topics is for the benefit of those reading and posting and not a plot to upset coulsdoneagle.

The thing is it’s not the same as every window as we will need players in to replace those we have lost.
Last season we lost Puncheon, Speroni,Williams, Kai Kai, Sako and Batshuayi and we have now sold AWB.
At least some of these will need replacement.
Admittedly, other than AWB and Batshuayi , these are not first teamers but you need a squad of 25 and the current Swiss tour has a number of youngsters who have no chance of featuring next season.
As well as this we have Luka, Benteke and Roy with one year left on their contracts and the current uncertainty around Zaha.
This is not being negative but is being factual.
There is a feeling of drift and we are again linked with loans, free transfers and players out of contract.
This policy will eventually come back to bite you.

It is right back and striker I am waiting on us solving.

I highly doubt we’ll fail to acquire a decent right back who wants regular Prem football with some money to spend a reasonable sum on him. Ideally he’d have been signed earlier but I suspect getting value is even more crucial. It’s also a position that doesn’t take that much time to get used to teammates. It’s not like it’s central with things going on all around you. If he’s not ready for the first match then Ward is suitable for when the first few matches are always that bit slower.

The loaning in of strikers always concerns me, even if Hrolf thinks we should rely on loans only until we’re finally bought, whenever that’ll be, so we keep AWB and never sell Zaha, or finally sell him for £20 mil and face the same problems with less cash.

Maybe we’ll be surprised and grab some decent players with ready cash, but I won’t hold my breath as we’re paying for lack of coherent strategies and mistakes of recent seasons, as well as the usual wait until the eleventh hour just because Parish likes to. But I’ll reiterate, I expect a permanent right back and the best loan striker we can find, the best he fits, which I don’t really think we got with Batshuayi, but then Benteke doesn’t suit Roy so there’s more problems we’ve created.

Agreed.
I think that if we don't pursue Castagne then Ward will start the season with the possible addition of James on loan from Chelsea.
As for the striker, we need something different from the Benteke/Wickham/Sorloth type ( i.e. a goalscorer )
I don't see Michy becoming available unless Chelsea have their ban lifted, and Morelos is a gamble given his disciplinary issues...never easy to fill this position

There are 2 positions I’ve read that people would like.

Winger. This isn’t a preferred style of Roy’s. We’ll be using industrious types when Wilf and Townsend aren’t available.

CB. Not going to happen until one of Sakho, Tomkins, Dann, Kelly go.

We should have 2 LB’s, 2 RB’s, a handful of central midfielders that do a bit out wide but not enough going forward and a couple of non scoring or playing strikers.

It’ll be a season like last season that’ll depend on the loan striker and how we start, which depends on the loan striker as well.

This is our reality whether we like it or not. I’m ready, well im saying it at least, for some boring football to keep us in the division because it’s far better than crashing down 20-30 or 40 places in the 3 divisions. Ask anyone who’s experienced that. Every fan on radio experiencing that would swap places with us. I don’t think things have been planned or implemented professionally or with the right people but it is the reality of the situation we face. Being better than 3-6 teams down the bottom.

This season I might loan out my season ticket when it’s inevitable we’ll lose because we’re stretched yet again. Can’t do those games much longer.

I can see Villa doing a Fulham this season. They have spent £93m on some pretty average players. Mings £22m? £25m on a striker that had his best season in the Belgium league for a team that came second and only scored 10 goals.

The world has gone mad.

Yes it does look that way. Looks like they are going to spend 100 mill plus. Hopefully Brighton newcastle maybe Southampton will finish below us also . I'd take 16th place now if it was offered .
