how can we ridicule the idea of UFO's and all that ?

we have most of the planet following organised religions. Nothing more whacky than that.

Bill Bryson expresses it fairly well in layman's terms in one of his books, buy there are more learned versions.

This does make sense to me, but at the same time there is likely life on millions of planets, and as such I'd imagine that the instances of two planets with life on next to each other would not be unthinkably uncommon as opposed to a random location. Conditions stand a greater chance of being similar.

Not that I'm saying that's true of us, as it likely isn't, but it offers a reason for why life forms encountering other life elsewhere may have happened countless times.

I'd rather believe in aliens than religion

Men in black at the end is thought provoking much like Jason and the argonauts with the gods playing a game of chess.

Life is out there. There is virtually no chance of us being alone.
Our solar system appears to be unusual judging by what we have observed. The Earth perhaps more so.

That might mean that intelligent life like ourselves could be very infrequent. That does not mean that we are not being visited. There are almost infinite possibilities.

The problem with this subject is firstly, the loony factor. If you talk about it, you are likely to be branded a loon, and there is no doubt that the subject does attract some nut cases.
Second. Trying to apply logic to a subject which has no certainty. Despite some trying to appear 'informed', it is impossible to make educated judgments about a subject about which there is no understanding.

If you don't want to wait for aliens to show up, you can always do it yourself

I have always wanted to see it with my own eyes before I believe it.
I had a funny experience a couple of weeks ago. Where I live you will regularly see trans-Atlantic flights. So I was out the back having my last cigarette of the evening at around 11.30 and what I thought was a star or planet caught my eye. However, it was moving similarly to a plane but quite obviously silently, more smoothly and much quicker. It seemed high and basically went right over the house. I told my missus and she just laughed. She knows I always watch H2 and Discovery and the like.
Well the next night I just had this feeling - was closer to midnight this time and I went out for a fag. The same thing was at a different angle this time. This time my missus came out and was quite flabbergasted.
I was kind of excited but thought about it for around 10 mins and searched for satellites on the phone.
First thing that came up was the NASA site and when and where you will see the international space station in the night sky. The website has it down to a tee. Look it up yourselves - it is quite humbling to see it spin around the earth like that.

Probably you were looking at the ISS - it has been visible around that time this week......

We are only scraping the surface of the quantum mechanics and I'm sure that there is plenty more to discover yet.

A very presumptuous attitude, if I may say so.

No less presumptuous than your own.

I don't presume to know everything.
Using absolutes in this subject is absurd.

Nobody is bonkers for keeping an open mind.

You hear religious types justifying the possibility of God by saying that you can't disprove his existence but having insufficient knowledge of the existence of something makes it no more or less likely.

In the religious case, it is certainly a spurious argument because we can trace the origins of monotheism back and see how it evolved from something completely different.
Any creator being that could exist is not the God of the Bible or any other religious text.
With Alien life, we know that its existence is a virtual certainty, but that is all we can realistically presume.
We just don't know enough to claim certainty beyond that.

Thanks. You saved me the trouble of replying. In addition, the concept that some far-off advanced being can somehow overcome the physical mechanisms that have driven the universe for 16 billion years (give or take) is simply bonkers.

The Drake equasion would suggest the odds are far higher than you give credit for. Also to assume we're somehow the top of the evolutionary chain is a touch arrogant.

Granted, I have no evidence that alien life does exist (other than in Br13hton) but i'm certainly open to the idea and theories that others have mentioned. Ancient Aliens (whilst a bit bonkers) certainly is a thought provoking series offering plausable suggestions. The Unacknowledged (available on Netflix) is also an interesting film based on testimony including the ex Canadian Defence Minister who openly states that there have been visitations and Goverments are interracting with them.

Some would suggest that the two are linked...in that Religion and the worshipping of a daiety is a result of Alien visitation..
