There was a programme in the 70s, James Burke I think, that made the point that given the distances involved any aliens visiting would be like travelling from London to Sydney to find a specific grain of sand on a beach. Not so much would it be possible as why bother?

Even a more modest space related achievement or event such as returning to the moon would be a rather inspirational event.

I agree with others. We live in a vast universe, distances between even "neighbours" to our Solar system are difficult to contextualise, let alone between more distance objects in our Galaxy or even inter galactic distances which become incomprehensible.

I accept we do not know everything, but we have a good grounding knowledge in quantum physics and other supporting sciences. This is proven by advancement in every day technology relying on things such as Einsteins General Relativity theory [GPS a case in point].

The same theories mathematically prove that for any object to travel at the speed of light [or beyond] its mass becomes infinite and therefore so does the energy to move it. Travelling at the speed of light will still take many many years just to travel very short astronomical distances.

So using a law that most easiest explanation is usually the correct one, too much is against existence of UFOs being of extra-terrestrial intelligence origin.

Besides if their technology is utterly beyond our comprehension to allow them to not adhere to the laws of physics, which all of our existence and technology is currently governed by, why are they getting "caught" by extremely primitive technology.

The light speed limit only exists if you can't turn off mass.

In the world of the quantum entanglement means that some form of information exchange is instantaneous regardless of distance....it's a world where instant teleportation is possible as well.

So many possibilities exist and so little is known that it's more a case of us surviving long enough rather than us not being able to traverse vast distances.....in my opinion anyway.

I really hope we get teleportation, it means the replicator will be invented the next day. Its basically a transporter but you create multiple copies at the other end instead of just one thing. Pop a nice bit of chicken on one end, and produce enough copies to end world hunger on the other...

Yep, while we have been making huge strides towards ending world hunger in the world over the last fifty years you feel that the advancements in DNA cloning and 3D printing could mean that the world literally advances exponentially faster on this.

While I have huge, huge issues with aspects of this....it isn't in the area of hunger certainly.

The biggest problem then becomes in controlling reproduction, which for me as a social conservative who abhors current accepted standards on abortion is another horror show.

Many successful inventions are not used the way the inventor imagined radio, and the internet were conceived as military communication systems not mass entertainment.

On that basis the first teleporter will be used for cosmetic surgery.

Teleport operator: Where would you like to go?

Woman: I don't care but when you bring me back can you make my legs longer and lose about 2 stone. O and can you change the colour of my eyes?

Bill Bryson expresses it fairly well in layman's terms in one of his books, buy there are more learned versions.
