Alan Lee - Cult Hero

Alan Lee was slightly tubby and rubbish.

I mean, rubbish on a "how is this a professional footballer?" scale of dog s***. The occasional knob end bangs on about him like they've got nostalgia for something that didn't exist, but really, he represents the doldrums. I'll never understand the affection.

Cult hero? Maybe for those with absolutely no clue.

Loved Alan Lee, gave his all every time and celebrated every goal like he'd won the fa cup. Real spirit and from the same mould as Hill and Derry. Footballers with soul.

Alan Lee was bought by Neil Warnock for I believe £650,000.
He was at the club at the same time as Kuqi and Scowcroft who of course both played for Ipswich.

Lee was never a prolific scorer for us but was a hustle and bustle centre forward who relished a physical battle and worked hard.Certainly not the quickest.
Don't think he was a stranger to a yellow card !

paying 650k for alan lee when we were skint and had very little money to spend was “peak warnock”

You cant call him a cult hero. I remember him as a classic Warnock player. In terms of footballing ability it was brute force over skill in a time of our history which was the equivalence of the dark ages.

Following Palace since 25 Feb 1978

Yeah, that’s why he spent nearly his whole career in the second tier picking up international caps, cos he was that bad.

Absolutely no clue.

Give over, he was shocking. Just a great lump charging about the place elbowing people and making a nuisance of himself. The absolute pits. Cult hero? He embodies a very dark period of our history which we should strive never to return to.

I remember when he had to leave the pitch with blood pouring from a head wound. Five minutes later he reappeared to rousing cheers from the crowd wearing a head bandage like a turban!

Distant memory, but I have a feeling that manager Ronnie Moore said of Lee that he spends more time on the floor than Joe Bugner !
In actual fact I believe that it was Moore who signed Lee for Rotherham.

Not the most skilful nor did he pretend to be.

But he did the job he was paid to do.

Maybe someone should show Benteke a video of Alan Lee outmuscling and upsetting defenders....

He was a championship target man - more about effectiveness than ability, but he was effective. Being a cult hero has very little to do with talent.

The Hillsborough squad was one of the best I’ve ever seen at Palace in terms of playing for the shirt - it was a special season and the closeness between squad and fans was fantastic - how anyone can look back at members of that team with anything but fondness is quite bizarre to me (except Stern John, who deserves it all and more!)

Agree that it was a dark period of our history but Lee did exactly the job he was employed to do.

Not a cult hero in my opinion but certainly one that our 30 plus million striker we have been lumbered with could take some lessons from.

On reflection I've been harsh. Fully endorse this post.
