Maybe, but as it was a very long time ago I doubt whether anyone really knows. Apocryphal stories are like that. The point remains whatever version is true.

Badger is correct

The whole point about the Knut story, whether or not it's true, is that he was proving he couldn't turn back the tide. This to me is a rather important message for many people on this site. The future will happen no matter how much whingeing is done. Ride the wave or drown.

The future will most definitely happen.

Remember your own advice.

We can agree that 2050 is only 30 years away. That's obvious. You claim was that the world population would increase to 15 to 20 million in a few years, which is double what the UN say will happen by 2050. You then say it will "climb well above that" because 2050 isn't the "levelling point". It might not be but if it will only reach 10.7 billion in another 50 years it means the rate of growth will markedly decline. I asked you where you got your figures so we can see if they are more authoritative than the UN. An answer has not been given.

So if we refuse to accept refugees who else will take our share? How do you think they will feel about that? Would they want to do business with such a country? Or do you plan to let the innocent, including many women and children, face death from war or starvation because you refused to help?

The whole world does not want to exist at the same standard as the west. Some do, but some just want enough food, water and security to live their own lives, in their own ways.

The world can certainly sustain itself as it does now. By harnessing change rather than fighting it and harvesting all it's benefits we can use it to provide all we need. Science and technology will provide the answers. The use of such things as GM to produce drought resistant crops, higher yields and disease resistance will ensure we get much more from the land and oceans. We must do that whilst combating climate change which more certainly has been impacted by man whose contribution to it must be curtailed. This can only be done on a global scale and countries like the UK need to be at the forefront as the leaders, both in making the argument and taking the necessary action.

Scare mongering about the future level of the world population being the reason why we need to limit immigration now is disingenuous nonsense. We need to ensure we manage immigration and ensure we develop the necessary resources to make sure no-one is disadvantaged. We need to ensure that all new immigrants intend to respect British culture and not seek to interfere with it. They need to understand that British law applies to all without any exceptions.

Exactly how do you think we should reduce the world population, which is, as I have shown, unnecessary anyway?

You do have stamina. You definitely deserve a medal.

I do foresee a need to control immigration quite strongly in the future by the way, when the food wars start looming.

Along with the rising world population there is also the question of what people will actually do in the future. Honda have been working on humanoid robots for years but their model called Asimo is already perfectly capable of acting as a waiter or doing other manual tasks, bar and shop work for example. There are already driverless trains and driverless busses are being trialled so why not driverless taxis? If not in the next five years then certainly in the next twenty or thirty.

It's nothing to be frightened off. It does though have to be managed.

I am old enough to remember the "leisure revolution" that was promised for everyone. Well it arrived for some, me included, but not for everyone as so many are having to work their socks off just to stay afloat.

Maybe this time we can do better but it does require some proper debate and an acceptance that we all need to share so that all can benefit.

Life is not about work. Life is about living, enjoying relationships, building families, having experiences and constant learning so you can try to be a better person. Work is just the means to provide those things so if we have to do less of it we can enjoy more of those things that are important.

I accept this is all idealism and difficult to achieve in practice so produces very big challenges. Those challenges are not going to disappear so they need to be faced.

When you play as many games of bowls every week as I do you build up your stamina! I won two "medals" last year. I have the cup to prove it!

Hopefully we will avoid food wars through the use of food science and technology and the sensible use of land resources. Everyone in the west could easily survive very well on a much reduced diet to that we now eat.

Yes but how are people in the future going to be paid or is everyone going to live in some vast hippie commune and pick flowers for each other.

Imagine Marvin in a thong, gyrating to 'keep your hat on'.....not really what I'm going to spend my money on but I'm sure there will be takers.

You are being disingenuous.

The world population depends on birth rate which is falling globally, but life expectancy and the current rising number of people at breeding age means that population will not fall for around a couple of hundred years. Even if the world population leveled out at 10 billion, which is down the bottom end of the prediction graph as it could be double that, it would still be 3 billion more people, the vast majority of which would come from Asia and Africa.
Those places are the least able to deal with the increase and this problem is likely to become more acute with climate change.
Refugees will be flowing into Europe at a much higher rate than today and our declining European population will soon be an endangered race and struggling to sustain water supply, energy supply and food production.
In order for resources to be sufficient, our use per capita would have to reduce to a third world level.

The alternative is to keep the resources for ourselves at around the current level.

What do you want for your family line in the future?

The obvious way to control population is with sterilisation in the places that most need it.

You seriously believe that sitting on our hands is the answer? Spoken like a 75 year old.

Why could it be double that? Who says so?

Probably true, so that points up where we need to most direct our attention. Ensuring that these places become self sufficient through the use of science and technology and sustainable agricultural practices is the priority.

Refugees will be flowing into Europe at a much higher rate than today and our declining European population will soon be an endangered race and struggling to sustain water supply, energy supply and food production.

People don't leave their homes and loved ones lightly. If there is a decent life at home then they will stay there. It's our job to try to help them.

In order for resources to be sufficient, our use per capita would have to reduce to a third world level.

Is simply untrue. It's scaremongering nonsense. We need to increase resources to ensure they match the needs. We can do that by using technologies we already have and others that will be developed.

The alternative is to keep the resources for ourselves at around the current level.

Why? Don't you think we cannot benefit from new technology ourselves?

What do you want for your family line in the future?

The same as most of us I guess, but I realise that their future also depends on the rest of the world having a secure future. Remove that and tensions will lead to conflict that could end life on the planet. I don't want that for my family.

The obvious way to control population is with sterilisation in the places that most need it.

No it isn't. It's education and the voluntary use of birth control, which can sometimes mean sterilisation. I know this works as I have seen it work. Compulsory sterilisation just produces resentment and resistance.

You seriously believe that sitting on our hands is the answer? Spoken like a 75 year old.

In what way are what I suggest "sitting on my hands"? I think they are a damn sight more achievable than anything you have suggested!
