Yes but how are people in the future going to be paid or is everyone going to live in some vast hippie commune and pick flowers for each other. That's silly. We have to work out the way to share. It will take time and the action will likely always be well behind the need. Whether this is done through taxation, early retirement, extended sabbaticals at fixed points in our lives or other creative ideas is yet to be worked out. I certainly don't have the answers and confess I haven't yet given it too much thought. It will be a political nightmare because the potential for a huge widening of the gap between rich and poor is obvious.
For the avoidance of doubt any comments in response to a previous post are directed to its ideas and not at any, or all, posters personally. |

If there is an automated option that’s the one employers will take for all the obvious reasons so millions of people won’t have a job from which to retire early or take a sabbatical.

I think you are missing my point. I understand what yours is. Whatever work is available will need to be shared, so that we all have some and we all have more free time. We cannot have a situation in which some people work and some don't. We cannot have some people with all the money and no time to enjoy it, and the others with all the time but no money to enjoy it. It will take some management that's for sure. Even today the need to be flexible and able to adapt to a changing environment is on a different scale to when I first started work. In the future that will be a regular occurrence. Retraining will become a way of life.

Someone working on a checkout is unlikely to retrain as a surgeon or any other job that requires intuitive human involvement and those are theoretically the only jobs that will be left.

Sounds like a John Lennon song. No job is safe from automation even those with a human component. For example lots of companies are already working on and marketing voice activated home care assistants. It's an upgraded version of Alexis. I can see a future when an elderly person's main contact will be one and not just about medical stuff. It will be able to hold a conversation with that person. Human contact maybe better but if you are a lonely person with no family it's better than nothing. It is will also be better than a 15 minute home care visit once a week as it will monitor the person 24x7. You also have to think outside the box with automation. For instance a robot office cleaner. Some people will say it will never be as good as a human however what they forgot is that you redesign the office space and furniture to make it easier for the robot to do the job. I live in a block of flats the window cleaners will not go above the 2nd floor on a ladder. I can see a robot window cleaner doing the job much better than a man with a long pole. Technology is not good or bad it all depends on how we use it. Big changes in the work place ahead which means bad news for the unskilled.

Why could it be double that? Who says so? A quick look on the internet will show you the range of population predictions including the actual range of the one you are quoting. In short. I think you underestimate the scale and the nature of the problems ahead and you deliberately ignore the reality of the replacement of European people both in Europe and the US. Currently, people in Britain use around three times their share of world resources and Americans 5 times. Personally, I'm not for giving up our lifestyle or our genetic heritage to people I don't know just because they have too many children. You can argue the details all day but I would rather plan to avoid these problems rather than convince myself that everything will just work out OK.
