With two non-scoring strikers up front I wasn't expecting us to score but I wasn't expecting a clean sheet so overall a good result.

The last 15mins of the first half and most of the second we looked good and it was not our first X1 so not bad overall.
My worry as with everyone else is scoring.
Benteke waits for ball in the box as opposed to moving towards is and anticipating whci means he is till shying away from opportunities which will not help.
A fit not fat Wickham might be the answer so we need to wait and see.

I thought it was a decent all round performance especially given that 3 of the back 4 were not starters last season.

However things continued to look less promising upfront. Ayew had a good game and Benteke won his fair share of headers but neither of them look confident in front of goal. Wickham looks top heavy to me and maybe only game time will improve his sharpness but he looks a long way off of the standard required at this level.

Maybe we will bring a loan forward in, but it looks like more of the same from last season. I think the club are committed to Benteke because they haven't been able to sell him so may as well play him. Lets hope he improves as the season progresses.

Same as Everton then lol

Not really. The Everton forwards had a bad day. Our strikers are having a bad career.

The fact that the board appears to think that we can go a season with only those three strikers beggars belief.

January will probably be another panic buy scenario.

We’re obviously not blessed with strikers, but as well as a makeshift back four yesterday I think our creative players were also in the same boat a little.

You’d hope that in a couple of weeks a fully fit/firing Zaha plus Camarasa and McCarthy, who will probably help build from the back a bit more, will at least provide us some more opportunities.

it was good to see Wickham get a run out but to me he looked over weight and unfit
all in all a good team performance and with some first team players missing and our new signings on the bench the future is looking bright

I agree with this. Benteke doesn't gamble on where the ball might be played in order to get ahead of defenders. He seems slow to read the unfolding possibilities around him. As Wrighty pointed out on MoD last night, there was a classic example in the last few minutes when PvA was clear in the box and tried to angle the ball past Pickford. Benteke just waited beyond the far post, so it was easy for a defender to clear the ball before it reached him. If Benteke had gambled by cutting into the area and so anticipating PvA's shot/cross, he could have had a shot (not saying he would have scored, of course - that is expecting too much).

Moise-Kean etc didn’t play and Iwobi came on late. We’ll still spend the season 8-10 places apart. I thought we competed well but only 2 x 1 minute periods on 55 mins and later on we were actually dangerous.

Not complaining on Roy because I knew he had to play last season’s players again and with Wilf fit to come on he made the 60 minute sub instead of 82 mins, but that’s how I saw the game. Composure in front of goal was sub standard again and Benteke nowhere to be seen hiding behind two players at the far post when there’s a perfect tap rolling across the goal mouth.

Concerning Maupay had a similar chance for bha at Watford and rounded the keeper to score whereas Ayew, as probably all of our players would’ve done, hit it straight at the keeper with the foot the ball was at. No adjustment of body or anything to bend it over or round the keeper. Just whack the ball in the direction of goal.

Yes, I noticed that too. In fact, it was remarkable how just about everyone else on MoD had strikers who could nick half chances, turn the keeper, and score from a distance. Lots of them were new signings too. Tekkers and Ayew? Not a chance.

It all points to yet another turgid season, especially at home where us supporters will be served up with the same uninspiring performances and a dearth of goals.Don't expect the team to entertain us - just expect them trying to grind out results.

Just back from a small trip to Poland so didn't know anything about the game. All they had on TV sport was grass ski jumping. One guy tried to go the longest distance and landed in a heap with one ski and it did remind me of Palace's transfer policy, lol. Lookin at our defence would of bitten your hand off for a 0-0. Disappointed that we couldn't get a striker over the line, particularly as my favourite choice Maupay scored on his debut for the Weeds

I heard Souness say that the Chelsea midfield this afternoon only scored 5 goals between them last season.Well, our strike force of Benteke,Wickham and Ayew got the grand total of 4 between them last season. Not much to get too excited about this season.

Did you cut and paste this from your last season's posts?
You may well be right but a little possitivity wouldn't hurt now and again. I wonder how much the Chelsea midfield cost
