I disagree - I find Mattteo's insights most interesting.

Yeah, most of us do, but he has realy lost the plot with this one

My understanding is that our 25-man squad had to be named the day after the transfer window closed.

It is no longer possible to sign free agents.

This is our squad now, until the transfer window reopens in January.

Ask me about Ronald de Boer.

Dorry, but that is not true. I think you meant that free agents had to be free before deadline day in order for them to still be signed.

But clubs can still take free players and the final squad for the PL season will be submitted on the 2nd of September.

Ribery would be one of the best transfers ever for a club like Palace. He runs, he fights, he scores, he assists, he would be an image and publicity instant hit. And for what?? For 85k salary?? You'd make that back from selling shirts and sponsors.

There seems to be some conflicting reporting regarding this, but Premier League rules do state that:

U.6. Changes to a Squad List may be made:
U.6.1. during the period of a Transfer Window; or
U.6.2. at other times only with the permission of the Board.

Clear as mud.

Anyway, the PL website lists us as having a 24-man squad so, if we can still sign free agents, presumably we are limited to just the one.

Now AC Fiorentina of Italy has entered the race for Ribery, but I doubt a Serie A club can offer 85k a week.

If a PL club wants Ribery, it certainly has the advantage

Nor can we. Why do you think we spent very little in the transfer window? AWB money went on paying off money owed on previous transfers (Benteke, Sakho etc). The US owners want out and can now claim to be debt-free and have kept their prize asset to any potential buyers.

We signed Matthieu Flamini after the deadline a few years back as a free agent

Indeed we did, and we still can, provided they were free agents before the window closed and we have a space in our 25. For example:

Considering that we just signed Jordan Ayew on at least 50.000 a werk (a players who doesn't offer half the goals Ribery would offer) and that we can offload either Benteke or Wickham on 120k or 60k to a Chinese club who at least payd half their wages and just play Zaha up front as starter and send Riedewald on loan to the Serie A or Dutch league with them paying half his 60.000 wages, I think we can give up on 2 players who won't even matter in this season to make room for an 85k salary of Ribery, who guarantees goals and assists

The downside of signing Ribery would be the inevitable request to be late for training every Thursday, as it's pension day and he'd need to call in at the post office first thing. On the plus side he won't ask for a space in the car park as he would use his free bus pass.

85k a week for a 36 year old. Plus signing on fee etc.
He would probably want more than a one year contract, if he even wanted to come here.

I think the squad right now should be good enough to survive this season. So bringing in a 36 year old offers us what? Not going to win anything or push for Euorpe having him for one season. So pointless signing.
