Loyalty

How much loyalty is it realistic for fans to expect from players?
It’s only a concept for some clubs anyway - lower division supporters know their in demand players are going to leave and the future of the club might depend on transfer money.
The chances of a young player making it are pretty slim so they’ve all seen friends discarded by clubs at different stages of their careers and understand the precarious nature of football.
A player signed by a manager on all sorts of promises might see that manager sacked and replaced by another who doesn’t rate him.
A long term player might see his wages eclipsed or his place taken by newer signings.
There are other factors: he might just not get on with his team mates, the fans might be in his back, he might have family commitments which put pressure on him to leave, etc.
There might be some players who genuinely support the team they play for but to most the club is just an employer and if another offers a massive pay increase they’re going to take it.

very little - loyalty is entirely contingent on performance levels, that drops no more loyalty hence what may seem a cynical attitude from players and managers, where I draw the line is someone like Venables, he had an illustrious career but the Burnley night at Selhurst will be high even on his list - he's talked about what a great night it was, yet he was happy to come back and help screw the club under Goldberg, with his financial demands and some dodgy plyer transactions, there seemed to be no residual affection or gratitude for where he got his break and all the joy that was shared, I don't expect this to make them charitable but not to sh*t on the doorstep of your first home so to speak.

It's one of those nebulous topics.

Like anything, it's a two way street....how loyal have any of us been to one single employer?

I think loyalty plays in as a factor of time spent with the club and the level of investment......however, as we note, a footballer is an employee and a club an employer and it's a business relationship.

Which is why the only loyalty you truly get is points for money spent in the club shop, food outlets or bar.

Only when they work

Clubs and fans are happy to dump a player, or a manager, who isn't working out. Why should it be a surprise if a player wants to leave?

You do get the odd exception but for most players it is a (very well paid) job and the club is nothing more than an employer.

It's 106 miles to Chicago, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark... and we're wearing sunglasses.

It's hard to argue with this, to be honest

.

Quite.

You do get the odd player who thinks that he's too good for us and wants to move onwards and upwards burs who the management think aren't good enough but there again we also get players who's contracts are allowed to lapse as we feel they aren't good enough.

There is also the Cabaye effect where they are offered a new contract on reduced terms
