Seems to be very popular here in the USA amongst other places. It's one of those sports I'm aware of but know little about. Apart from Matteo, anyone knowledgeable about it?

As has been witnessed several times, De Gea makes a number of saves with his feet.He grew up playing Futsal and uses Futsal techniques when using his feet to keep the ball out of the net.

It’s popular in Brazil. There are a few YouTube clips of Ronaldinho, Ronaldo , Neymar, etc playing it when they were young. Makes more sense developing close skills than sticking kids on pitches which are too big for them.

My son would get 4 games of it a season. This year as a under 11, it stops as they go from 7 a-side to 9 a-side. Futsal was just 5 a-side, so involved a lot of players coming on and off. Initially I enjoyed it. However, as they have got older the constant change of players disrupted things and rather than encouraging skill, the bigger lads worked out that with a small pitch and hard sports hall surface they could just thump the ball from the halfway line to try and score.

An illustration of the difference in the Brazilian approach to football. I’m not saying they’re right but they do seem to encourage skilful players.

Yes have to agree. Should be to encourage ball control and close skills. I thought that they needed a zone where you could score from, to stop the long range shooting.

As a result got to see more skill on the normal 7 a side games.

There was a stat I saw that a large percentage of footballers have birthdays in the autumn- the point being that at school they were six months bigger and stronger than some of the kids they were playing against and so caught the eye more. No idea if it’s true but it would make sense.
There was an interview with Kanu when he was at Arsenal in which the interviewer congratulated him on his skill “for a big man”. His answer “When I learned to play I was small. I got big later” seemed to cause some confusion.

Yes certainly wouldn't surprise me. Certainly know of one team who was getting players born in September and October so that they were generally physically bigger boys. Seems a shame that they are thinking like that already for what were 9-10 year olds.

My son was born early November so on the older side, however, he's only average height or perhaps just below. Last year was only his second season but he managed to finish 2nd highest scorer with 19 goals so well chuffed. Mainly played on left hand side of midfield, once or twice in defence and a few times up front.

Congratulations to him. If he keeps that up we might see him at at Selhurst. Unless he’s more ambitious of course.

I tell him to keep at it. He’s followed his Dad in supporting Palace. Someone I know who lives near us, Len Tomkins, played about 20 times for Palace before going on to play over 500 times for our home town team Chelmsford City. Jack was so impressed when we bumped into him in the street and told him. I’d be happy if he could make even that decent non league level.

I've done my coaching courses in futsal, it's a lot more different to normal football than people think. The hard rubbery floor means you control the ball with the bottom of your foot and it's all about ball skill and quick transitions between defence and attack. Goal posts are also square...

I also got to go to see Burnley, Leeds, walsall and Birmingham at a junior futsal tournament at St George's park last year. They gave some very good players, one Leeds striker was the grandson of a Leeds legend (cant remember the grandad name).
