Riedewald was a big part of the problem tonight

Doesn’t know how to play wing back. Kept slowing the game and playing unimaginative balls. Wilf never really got going as a result, although he looked pretty uninterested in any case.

Wickham also dreadful.

Hennessy NEVER saves anything......

Supported Palace for over 69 years since the age of 7 and have seen all the ups and downs and will probably see many more ups and downs before I go up to the big football club in the sky.

Still carrying on with your one-man vitriol at WH. He kept a clean sheet - what more do you want? OK, he didn't get anywhere near any of the pens but none of our keepers ever do. Certainly VG went the wrong way on Saturday too. Perhaps at the next shoot-out the keeper should go the same way every kick - statistically he must get it right once.

Anyway RH is to blame for this farce. He picks the team, decides the tactics and subs etc. OK he didn't get the players he wanted in the summer, but he got McCarthy who he'd been after for years. That team last night should have won comfortably, but Roy's stifling tactics blew any chance of that. What's wrong with moving the ball forward quickly?

Let's put this into perspective.

It's the league cup. We were almost never going to win this.

We have a thin squad right now (especially in defence), and we risk them getting injured in these matches.

We started with 10 different players vs the game against ManU, with only Kelly remaining. This included playing people like Woods and Riederwald out of position. Anyone remember the game we had a few years ago, after Roy first started (the injury year), where we also were blown out in the League cup (where PVA made 3 bad mistakes)? It was almost a blessing.

The money for playing these games is also tiny (much less than the FA cup).

Finally, we did create chances, quite a lot of them. We just couldn't finish. This game played 10 times, we win it 8 times. Okay, we lost, but we really were the much better team.

Sometimes it's better not to have to worry about these games. So let's all take a breather and move on to Saturday.

Whenever I see WH on the team sheet I despair as I know what the result will be. WHY RH picks him still none of us can understand as well as is his choice in Benny as he could not score in open play if he tried. He is always complaining that his team mates do not feed him the ball....What a load of cr@p he has got to the stage when we should farm him out the Chinese as they seem to want him and for what reason I just cannot see why.
I agree with you that RH does not pick a team to suit the purpose only his favourites. He complains that he does not get the players he wants in the windows but that applies to other managers as well but you do not see them complaining all the time like Roy does. I am afraid Roy is past his sell by date and we need a younger manager who can read the modern game and make the necessary adjustments when required we might then see a change in our home match results. When you see Roy on TV or Internet he is scratching his head wondering what the f@ck to do even though he has subs sat behind him that could turn a match around IF he had the balls to do it. Think about it WHY did Roy get the elbow as the England manager????? I rest my case.

Firstly, just because we are u.nlikely to win the cup makes no difference. We are unlikely to win the league, but we should at least try. Secondly the team we put out last night should have been more than capable of beating a league 2 side, thin squad or not.
Finally we created lots of chances and didn't put them away.......this is our biggest problem in a nutshell. Played 4 games this season and failed to score in 3...looking forward to staying up with lots of 0'0 draws and the odd lucky win.

He did actually, just got a hand to their 3rd one pushing on to the inside of the post and it squeezed in

This may have been answered in the thread but I couldn't see it in the first couple of pages. What formation did we play yesterday?

The lineup suggests 4-4-2 but I'm not sure who would have played wide out of Meyer and Camarasa or did we go with 4-5-1 and Wickham was dropping out to the left when we were defending?

The team on paper should have been more than good enough to win that. How you can have Meyer, Camarasa, Townsend, Wickham and Benteke on the pitch and not score against a League Two side is beyond me.

Sky sport highlight with Palace having a dangerous free kick which was just over floated by Camarasa to nobody in the box. Why not have another player with him and touch it off, roll it forward, even a winger to run down the flank or a dangerous low ball into the box ? No imagination whatsoever in the front third of the pitch. Turgid.

They might get a game or two in the FA Cup, before we go out to the likes of Harry the Hornet.

Cobblers, it will be Northampton based on last nights performance.

It looked 442 to me but Meyer was sort of playing inside left rather than wide. Woods and Riedewald didn't get forward much first half and looked like they'd been told to do more second half. Camarasa seemed to sit deeper than Meyer. This changed to what looked more 4-3-3 when the subs were made.

These sort of results happen every year, it’s not unusual . Norwich, actually got done in ninety minutes so it happens, the only explanation is these Premier league second strings are not really teams, they don’t work as a team regularly ,so it sometimes doesn’t happen for them, against elevens that work together most weeks.
It’s still bloody disappointing when a collection like the one Palace put out last night can’t even rustle up a goal in ninety minutes against a moderate 4th division outfit. That side of it must be alarming, as the fact is the forward line last night will be expected to keep us in the Premier.
