Evidently VAR was used to check whether Grealish
dived and after checking the decision to book him was upheld and not to award a penalty

Surely a panel of qualified referees with video evidence couldn’t get it
wrong

Going by the reaction of the press in general, and several high profile ex players. All that VAR does is gives us more referees ,to accuse of not having a clue.
A lot of this ,seems to be based on Palaces popularity rating, Whats new?

Palace popularity is poor and I thought Match of the Day was shocking! Not a word about the game or how Palace dominated for most just all about the penalty claim.

I also feel that the boy Grealish will make a rod for his own back. Although a talented player he is petulant and spends a large majority of the game on his arse! This in itself makes it very difficult for referees to decide if it’s a genuine foul or if he’s throwing himself to the floor.
In my opinion they got it spot on re the penalty, minimal contact if any just Grealish throwing himself to the floor whilst running at pace.

Just read the following :

In a statement, the Premier League said: "The referee considered that Jack Grealish committed an act of simulation in the penalty area, and blew his whistle to stop the game before the ball went into goal.

"Under the Ifab protocol the video assistant referee system (VAR) is allowed to review the potential penalty situation. Having reviewed the incident the VAR judged that no 'clear and obvious' error had occurred and the on-field decision of simulation remained.

"The VAR was unable to check the 'goal' because the whistle went before the ball went into the net."

On the 'Sunday Supplement' one of the panelists said that as the referee had blown, VAR was not used as they don't want to re-referee games but this is at variance with the PL statement.
I do get the impression that the general public are totally confused as to when VAR is used or not.

Maybe all this comment regarding , the goal that wasn’t proves . Is that no matter the technology, the experience of various officials involved. Gary and the lads know better. Which can only mean . No matter how hard anyone try’s to satisfy every punter. It won’t ever happen. Because you can’t allow for bias.

Maybe it’s a case of they can’t be sure it’s a penalty. The ref made the error of blowing his whistle, although he thought he’d dived because Grealish kept going to ground everywhere.

A couple of pundits have said that he didn’t dive as he didn’t appeal for anything. Presumably a player who’s been kicked up in the air and is prone in the ground holding a broken ankle should get his appeal in before anything else.

Maybe a sign of the times though as usually do appeal for anything now!

They also said he played on so wasn't expecting a foul.

Would he have done if Lansbury wasn't free on goal ?

I haven't seen MOTD so not heard the comments there but I have just watched the highlights on the Palace site and the "incident" several times, frame by frame.

I think the ref got it spot on. It looks at normal speed as though he was fouled outside the box by Zaha, but in fact he wasn't touched and as Zaha was trying to back off him he threw himself forward, continuing him momentum and colliding with Cahill.

I also read a piece on a Birmingham newspaper website by a local journalist who suggested Grealish only has himself to blame because he does the same thing all the time.

There’s another point here though - how is the impartiality of the referee affected if he’s making decisions based on a players reputation?

That isn’t what was said

As he has history refs look out for this. It’s a known modus operandi
