BECAUSE many people have questioned its Brexit bias (which he confirms) and not its role in the world. That's the story.

Does he?

Having read the report, which is undeniably a Mail edited series of quotes and not the full book, what I got was not that the BBC is biased towards remain but that the management were taken by surprise by the referendum result and had underestimated the level of dissatisfaction with the EU in the country and that had it's own consequences.

The fact that they underestimated public opinion so badly speaks to their innate bias which has been reflected in the subsequent reporting.

If something was black, you'd argue it was white!

Only if was actually white and someone else was seeing it in the dark, so in the wrong way.

I always try to recognise the difference between fact and opinion. That the BBC is biased can only ever be an opinion. John Humphrys has one. He also has a book to sell. Maybe it will stop the silly idea that all BBC journalists are left wing as he obviously isn't. That he felt frustrated by the need of the nation's major broadcaster to stay within strict rules that some perceive as political correctness comes over pretty strongly. I bet many of the journalists there feel it too, whatever their personal views might be.

I suggest we read Mr Humphrys's book in full including the bits where he gives fulsome praise to the BBC. They won't though make headlines in the Mail will they?

Why?

They weren't alone were they? That's not bias. It was a pretty widespread miscalculation. The question subsequently has been to try to understand it and then how to respond. In general I think no-one actually ought to have any complaints.

Why? Because they were convinced they were right when they weren’t. If that conviction wasn’t based on bias then what was it? If the BBC weren’t charging for the privilege of their condescension there might be fewer complaints.

On that basis every opinion is based on bias!

More likely that it was based on experience and analysis that proved incorrect.

The BBC licence fee is a very neat way of ensuring that neither government nor commercial influence can interfere with it's independent editorial standards. You might not like the result but in my opinion this produces an organisation that is rightly a British treasure which is the envy of many in the world.

As with other thing just be careful what you wish for. The grass isn't always greener elsewhere.

Not every opinion but I doubt many people share your view of the BBCs impartiality on the subject.
How does the license fee ensure no government influence?

That the BBC are being attacked in the right wing press is obvious. Why they might do that seems pretty obvious to me too. That people believe the right wing press is what is sad and unfortunate. I remember the days when the Mail was a decent newspaper.

The BBC being independent of government means it has no more influence from them than from any other political group. So long of course that the way they are funded remains unaltered.

The Tory government threatening to change that also threatens their independence and so that is the only way at the moment that a government can influence. Far from there being a leftward leaning threat it is more likely to want to please the right so as to remove that threat.
