You might as well try and salvage something from the current wreckage.
Letting Benteke's contract run down and running the risk of recouping nowt at the end would make him an expensive disaster & do nothing to help his confidence either.
At least by extending it on presumably lower money we still have something to work with.
Benteke knows he has until January to find some form before some serious competition arrives at the club.

He's already an expensive disaster! Giving him a new contract makes him an even more expensive disaster!

It is suggested here that by extending the contract we have more chance of getting some cash for him in the simmer of 2021.

Can someone explain the maths on this.

Assuming he has maintained same deal then the cost will be in the region of 6,500,000.

So, if a club is prepared to pay 10,000,000 we get a paper income of 3,500,000.

Is it really worth keeping him occupying a squad place in the vague hope of getting in a few million.

Responsibility Deficit Disorder is a medical condition. Symptoms include inability to be corrected when wrong, false sense of superiority, desire to share personal info no else cares about, general hubris. It's a medical issue rather than pure arrogance.

The only way I could (barely) accept this is if they agreed to dilute the money in 2 seasons (example instead of 6M in one season I give you 4M for 2 seasons), so that the lower wage makes moving him on easier.
But I don't hold my breath.

It has to be something like this. At say £40k a week there is an outside chance it could work.

If you offer a contract to a player on less money than his current deal he has the right to a free transfer, obviously that would be different if he agreed to accept it, cant see him accepting that.

Perhaps he'll continue to be paid his current rate until the summer and then a new rate will take over? If we're still paying him over 100k p/w maybe it would have been best to cut our losses.

I have no idea what his new contract looks like but I did hear that he had far better contract offers from elsewhere yet still chose to sign here.

You would have to assume that it is going to be on reduced guaranteed terms but you just never know with Palace.

Why? We could get 2 free transfers on his wages to give us more depth but no Parrish yet again shows his incompetence in spades. Who else would give this waste of space an extension..we are truly being run by a clown.

A business decision with the club's interests at heart by a shrewd and competent businessman.

Some might take an alternative view and conclude that the lunatics have taken over the asylum !!!!

This is quite interesting; how many jobs are there in which poor performance isn’t deemed just cause for termination?

Lengthy absence counts though. Just need someone to lock Benteke in a coach toilet for a couple of weeks.
