Could just as easily be headlined ‘home-schooling couple...’.

Nope, their extremist veganism was a factor in this neglect and death.

Home schooling would not have led to death.

there is nothing wrong with veganism per se, a healthy balanced diet is more than achievable following a vegan, or even a plant based diet.

what these people are, are earth vegans, they only eat raw food that comes directly from the ground, and its f***ed up...i used to cater for one, who was early 30’s and he was so calcium & protein deficient his bones & teeth were failing him and was wheelchair bound, this was entirely down to his diet.

This woman thought the same but now she thinks quite differently:

Supported Palace for over 69 years since the age of 7 and have seen all the ups and downs and will probably see many more ups and downs before I go up to the big football club in the sky.

It is a rather limiting diet. While I think most people could quite happily get by as vegetarians, due to limitations within a vegan diet it's something that certainly requires more planning to avoid deficiencies. The problem being if someone just suddenly adopts the 'I'm a vegan' mindset, but doesn't actually get into the details of what they're consuming, they can certainly encounter problems.

A benefit of a more typical diet is that even if it's pretty crap, you're more likely to have the basics covered. The downside of course is that it often operates at a surplus, too much sugar, too much everything. And so you see diabetes and the like cropping up at unusually young ages, which also has life long implications. There's enough info out there for people to plan a half decent, balanced diet for themselves and their kids if they have the inclination to do so though.

As a diet I view veganism as one of many options.....for adults that is.....I mean it isn't a natural diet for the human being but each to their own.

It certainly isn't for me but I can see why some argue for it.

Some people have definitely over reacted to the title thread. My criticisms were specific and not a general attack on veganism......The couple are loons and they are vegans.....a form of veganism led to this horrific and fatal situation.

Hence title.

Plenty that we eat and do in the modern world isn't particularly natural by any past standard. Though I would certainly agree that deficiencies can be more prevalent with a limited diet, and that there is no more important time than childhood to get a complete diet. If for ethical reasons people feel compelled to raise their children in a vegetarian environment, as long as the diet is truly complete in terms of the nutrients received I don't suppose it's a serious problem. Not as though it's for me or mine though, along the lines of your view. I would tend to agree that veganism is a step too far for children though.

A pertinent point to make about these parents is that they look perfectly healthy and aside from being mental clearly had a much more complete and calorific diet, as vegans, than their children did. It would seem that, through rank stupidity, they effectively starved and hydrated their children, rather than truly offered any understood branch of diet. They appear to be very 'off the grid' types. Baby delivered at home, had never seen a doctor. The more people detach from wider society, the more they're likely to go off the deep end in one form of another, so perhaps it's a sadly predictable outcome. If any medical professional had seen their children in the months previous, they would've stepped in. A tragic situation.

you see susmik...you didnt read my post, or the actual article you posted before posting it.

the lady had her & her kids on a raw- vegan diet, the same as the people in stalinsays origional post.

of course with no protein or calcium in your diet you are extremely likely to get ill, however if you were to follow a normal vegan diet you should be able to get all the nutrients needed to sustain a healthy diet.

If people want to eat a boring vegan diet then let 'em I say.
Just don't tell the rest of us what to eat.

The trouble for me is that I tend to associate vegans with the kind of people who have totally dumb ideas about a whole range of other topics.

A good and nuanced post on a tragedy.

I suppose that mental illness and attachment to wacky concepts tends to be higher than average.....duh!...I've just realised how obvious a statement I've made there.

I wouldn't say veganism is wacky instead I'd file it under alternative diet however what this couple were doing was loon city.

I think that mental illness and transgenderism are also connected at higher than average rates and that we are living through a strange period in European society where leaders in society are scared to state basic truths out of fear of ruin.

A large part of the problem with diet is the vast amount of information being pushed by commercial sources.
There is unbiased information too but many people fail to grasp the bigger picture and just take the bits that appeal to their mindset.
The fact is that different people have different dietary needs but the average human can live a normal life with an average life span by eating just about anything with the inclusion of vitamin C.

Children should not be subjected to faddy diets based on half truths and ignorance since their primary biologial need is to grow and develop normally.
