Watching two of the players who were supposedly on our radar as replacements - Saint-Maxim and Sarr - you would have to say they still have a way to go to reach Wilf's level. I do still wish we had signed Saint-Maxim as he is a typical Palace winger: quick, tricky and entertaining. Pepe at Arsenal has also struggled to take off. Sarr scored a good goal but he looked similar to Bentenke in his rather laid back approach plus he's only managed two starts this season.

All those people saying they just want rid, be careful what you wish for as it is going to require some real skill in the market to replace him. He definitely needs to stay until the summer as it would be madness to sell him in January, especially given Townsend is struggling with an ongoing injury problem too.

Newcastle signed him for £16.5 Mill.

Certainly direct, real acceleration, gets his team up the pitch and has a sprinkle of the unexpected.
Not the best finisher and critics in France believe that a lack of end product has stopped his progression.

I dont deny its a pantomime every window, but I dont trust the club to buy a replacment with the money. I am sure I am not alone on that and until they can show the fans that they will, I want him to stay put.

I don't think we will ever be able to replace him as no player of his ability would 1- be affordable and 2- want to come to Palace .
Selling Zaha would IMO be madness but if that is where its going getting a couple or 3 players in BEFORE he leaves should be the plan

And we still need a striker

This is certainly the point for me.

Wilf, even when not turning up, is still a significant focal point of our attacking play and we struggle as it is.

I would not begrudge him a good move, especially if we get good cash for him, but it is less the replacement of a single player, a winger in this instance, and more the need to address the way we get into, and score in, the final third.

Wilf would need to be replaced with a new attacking strategy and not another winger. We may need several players for that.

Just my opinion.

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!

Hodgson has said himself that his prime objective is to stave off relegation. His strategy has worked thus far and is likely to work this season.

I cannot see him abandoning his tried and trusted strategy and resorting to a new formula so I suspect a like-for-like replacement is the more likely outcome.A new manager would be required to change the way we play.

I had based my comment in light of previous posts, which I agree with, that a like for like replacment for Wilf probably does not exist specifically in a hypothetical market where we would be able to immediately bring that person in.

If a like for like was available, we would't have much of an issue. As it stands however, I think it highly unlikely Wilf's value and structural place in the team can be replicated by a single acquisition, not to say I am correct in my thinking.

I understand your point completely Willo and agree but I think you've come at that with a different angle to my own. I agree that is the most likely outcome should Wilf leave but that will probably leave us far worse off. Most of our attacking play goes through Wilf and if the so called 'like for like' were not up to standard we would have to change tactics - the players would progressively do this naturally throughout a game or season irregardless of the manager.

I was trying to suggest what we would need to do to resolve a 'no Wilf' situation.

Tough one and poss controversial, he prob represents our best chance off a points yeild but,,

Injuries and suspensions arising from this game( we know they are a bunch of clogger, nobbler barstewards)

A.) Injured / suspension hampers our attacking threat for an indeterminate time.

B,) Scuppers any move, and the money that it brings for his replacement, + right back + striker+ giving the Americans their dividend.

Interesting idea.

Just as important as avoiding injury is avoiding a red card, and Watford are ideal candidates to provoke such a decision.

But would I leave Wolf out? That's a difficult one. I think big Ben should keep himself warm all the while Wolf is on the pitch.

Why not just not bother playing them, as they are too rough, give them the points.

Unbelievable thread.

Same as Teen Wolf? Teen Wolf ran the show. Team were hopeless without the wolf though, until the final.

Watford lacked that tough edge when I watched them against Saints; after they went ahead they seemed to play like a team in relative comfort, not one desperate for points and in the end it cost them. Even if they were the thugs of the last couple of seasons I would still play Wilf as you don't leave out your most dangerous player at this stage of the season unless they're carrying an injury.
