There’s nothing I like more than reading a good political biography (don’t judge) and this week I’m dipping into Neville Chamberlain’s Legacy - Hitler, Munich and The Path to War.

It’s a sympathetic study of a painfully shy individual who was massively vilified for his unsuccessful policy of appeasement towards Hitler in the run-up to the 1939-45.

As with all these sorts of books, I’m on the look-out for any indications that their subjects were fans of football - preferably Palace.

As far as I can make out, neither Chamberlain, nor Churchill, nor Hitler had the slightest interest in the game. I wouldn’t be surprised if all three went through their whole lives without attending a single match.

Perhaps they thought it beneath their dignity to be seen enjoying themselves in the ranks of the common man.

It was really only in the 1960s, after Harold Wilson announced he was a Huddersfield fan, that politicians (Margaret Thatcher and Theresa May excepted) decided that football might be ‘cool’ and that declaring an interest might be a vote winner.

Blair (Newcastle), Cameron (Villa) and Brown (Cowdenbeath) have ‘come out’, Corbyn purports to follow Arsenal and Farage reckons to be a Palace supporter.

Which are the clubs,if any,that Johnson and Swinson are most likely to support?

Isn't one self important Eddie Izzard quite enough?....We have to have that guy.....Like you imply it's not as though loyalty is his byword.

Kind of makes you wistful for the days of Ronnie Corbett.
