Wickham is never going to play 40 games in the prem and score 15 odd goals, best we can hope is 25 odd games and 8 or 9 nine goals, maybe he's not worth it on his salary, but stats aside he is a quality striker, if he can improve his fitness he can provide proper competition for any new striker we get in, his stats are geared against him in that everytime he returns from injury he is going to take games to get fit yet he seems to score each time he returns, and he kept Sunderland up almost by himself a few seasons back - he's gone to great lengths to get back to playing football, he has undoubted quality and if he is to make anything out of his career he will do it at Selhurst - so much effort has been invested in getting him up to scratch again, he won't solve all our problems but if we carry on looking after him he will repay us, that I do believe.

I don't know you don't know, I just purely hope.

This is becoming a kiddie duscussion bybnow. There is EVERY reason to suggest he cannot. Reality suggests he cannot. History suggests he cannot. He didn't do it when he was a fit 23-24 year old striker who had not been injured for 2 years. He is ot going to start bow, when he's on the verge of retiring.

I see a player who is one more injury away from retirement (God forbit, I don't wish it to him),but once you've had these injuries, ligaments are prone to snap like twigs.

Many here praise him for having come back from that and fought so hard. Well, nothing personal against Mr Wickham, but when you're on a Premier League salary with 5 zeros a week and all the gym and rehabilitation centers available, that's what you do. I'm sure that if anyone here would get paid that salary, we would have also worked hard in the gym too. It's either that or accept termination of the contract and no more salary..Hmm...

If we're going to laude someone, praise the club for extending his contract when he was injured and waiting for him to come back to the first team (though he really isn't a first team player for a PL side anymore).

Club has been amazing with Wickham, gave him all the patience and all opportunities in the world, even to get his name on the scoring sheet of a PL match once more. This is an amzing featvafter he has been theough. But he should be judged like all the others in the squad at this point. Shake his hand, wish him luck and send him on his way to a Championship club where he can gain playing yime and maybe, MAYBE, become what he once was after 80-100 matches there.

A PL club like Palace can't wait 80-100 PL matches for Wickham to become a PL player once again. Yes, once in a while he will be there to score. But to expect 15 or even 10 or even 5 goals a season from him after what he's been through is just wishful thinking. I expect that if he goes to the Championship he will take 3-4 years to get back on track (if he will ever). And maybe once he's about 30,he could be good enough for a PL transfer again.

There is every reason to suggest.

Of course it’s conjecture, of course no one knows what will happen. On that basis maybe he could score 40 goals in a season!

But based on what we do know, his scoring record to date, his injury record and the fact that he just looks a bit slow and sh@t these days I’d reckon it’s safe to say it’s almost impossible for CW to score 15 goals in a premiership season. In fact it’s almost impossible for him to stay injury free for 15 games!

And it’s the minutes, not even appearances, that would tell the tale a whole lot better, whilst still not telling how good a footballer Wickham ,actually is.
Goals so often are just a matter of getting on the end of things anyway. Would Sterling have developed the game he now has if it were not for the stream of fabulous passes that come his way, ? He has learned the runs and the finish ,but they only pay because of the fantastic assists he can rely on. The point being that at this level you are in many respects only as good as the feed you can expect.
Quiet honestly ,Wickham, gets a pat on the back for the goal at Norwich, but that goal belonged to all three lads, Pierrick, Wilf, and of course the feller on the end of it. If he keeps fit , and so does the rest of the squad, it could work out well for him and the club.

Thanks Willo; It's just that I'm expecting that we'll have to do with the squad we have at least until the summer and I'm wondering how we best use the diminishing player resources we have.

I fear Matteo you are correct. If you put aside the well-being of Wickham and our wish for him to succeed and then consider the bigger picture it is a no brainier to continue our existence in the Premiership we will need strikers of far greater effectiveness and durability than Wickham. It is a shame but the reality.COYP

In more recent seasons it's been difficult to find value in the January transfer window and the club's present financial constraints and ownership issues are well documented.

It's all very well saying fvck Benteke and Wickham off etc but on the premise that 10+ a season premier league strikers cost a few quid, and we're unlikely to get two in the January window the point is who will be more useful to us in the second half of the season ? ie Benteke looks like an absolute write-off whereas Wickham not so based on his last couple of appearances from the bench.

It's still a tiny impact, regardless of how much eagleman gets pissed at me for saying it

Ask 25,000 or so Norwich supporters whether they think he made a tiny impact or not!

Correct, if Fernandino hadn't got in first Connor would have scored.

He wouldn’t have, slowed down before the ball came across, it would have rolled in front of him.
