It's been said before but I'll repeat it. Freedom of speech doesn't exist for inoffensive speech. No one needs protection for inoffensive speech.

Yeah, there should be no consequences for opinions....You got that Castro.

You’ve literally offered out people on here for a fight for something they’ve said. Is that not a consequence of an opinion you didn’t like?

To paraphrase one of your learned favourite phrase, ‘freedom of speech for me but not for thee’

Sorry this is just a bit dim.

I've offered out...mostly in response to those who have already threatened violence.

What I haven't done is compel a consequence onto somebody. You know....the difference between an 'offer' and a compelled 'consequence'.

That's what you support and what I don't.

Are you sure you're really an accountant? Or are you drunk or something because I would have thought that the above was an obvious distinction.

There have been some pretty offensive views expressed in this thread, including posters being attacked for simply holding alternative opinions. Which seems pretty hypocritical as those doing it are actually championing free speech.

Are these "hate speech though"? Not in my book. Just insulting someone isn't enough. We must all be free to speak our minds and if anyone feels insulted then that's their problem. Hate speech is much more specific. It does though exist and it needs to exist, because the law demands that it does, and there is no freedom, of speech or anything else, unless it is under the law. It is defined as:-

Expressions of hatred toward someone on account of that person's colour, race, disability, nationality (including citizenship), ethnic or national origin, religion, gender identity, or sexual orientation is forbidden. Any communication which is threatening or abusive, and is intended to harass, alarm, or distress someone is forbidden. The penalties for hate speech include fines, imprisonment, or both.

The argument seems to be that the law needs to be changed and that Johnson is the man to do it. Is this likely? Not in my opinion unless he wishes to bring endless challenges to the government, diverting resources and creating many enemies. There are simply bigger things to be done.

There is already far too big a division in our fractured society and I cannot see any government deliberately seeking to widen it further by diluting the hate speech legislation, let alone repealing it completely.

Johnson might be a buffoon but he isn't a complete idiot.

For the avoidance of doubt any comments in response to a previous post are directed to its ideas and not at any, or all, posters personally.

Can you support that theory with evidence?

Sounds like a baseless Danism to me.

I think that is a seriously weird conclusion to draw. As well as being wrong.

Coming from the guy's who hasn't been right about anything politically since he turned up.

Apparently all his predictions....they will eventually happen....is that in the same way random monkeys would eventually type Shakespeare?

You know, they failed to materialise for the time he was talking.....but that's ok, because he's be right at some undefined point in the future.

So you see....he can't be proven wrong.

Very convenient....and pie in the sky.

I don't know whether anyone has ever calculated the statistical probable time it would take for a monkey typing the complete works of Shakespeare but it would be an interesting exercise. My instinct suggests it would exceed the estimated 4 billion years before the earth dies. Although I guess by then our evolved successors will be living elsewhere. Whether they take monkeys with them, or if they still exist, are other matters.

Nevertheless I expect that Brexit being reversed will happen rather earlier than that as will such things as globalisation, Trump's demise etc etc.

Just because things don't always work in the best way you would like them to doesn't mean they won't. It just means you need to have some patience and belief.

Both exist in ample measure among those determined to reverse the current trend towards populism, and it's threat to consensus government, which is doing so much damage in the western world.
