From my point of view, it was Tony Pulis that got Stoke and WBA relegated, not that they replaced Tony Pulis. He was last when he got fired from WBA, so if they got relegated after that, it's on him too. And Stoke never really recovered after he was forcing his players to be so defensive. Sure, Mark Hughes had some years, but he was not really an improvement as manager.

Pulis went to Middlesbrough too and, even though they were one of the most powerful teams in the Championship on paper and were trying to get a promotion, they had the worst goal tally from the Top 8, failed to gain that promotion and eventually sacked Pulis after a series of bad results too. Now they will have to wait years for a new manager to fix what Pulis did.

Chelsea is a good example of how defensive tactics damage a team but how you can come out of it. Conte gave them a title but 3 bad years after that. Basically, they let the "young blood" and talented players roam free and play attacking football, so now we have Mount, Abraham, Pulisic, Hudson Odoi, Batshuayi, Barkley, Loftus Cheek (when he's not injured) instead of Giroud, Bakayoko, Matic, Pedro, Moses.

When Pulis left WBA after 12 games they were in 17th place, so not in the relegation zone.
They had lost 4 games on the bounce when he was sacked and this followed on from the previous season when they lost 9 of their last 12 games.

In terms of Middlesbrough, they did suffer a dip of 6 consecutive defeats which took them out of the top 6 but they won 4 of their last 5 games and finished in 7th place.Pulis's contract was not extended so one can assume that the expectations of the club were not realised.

I think that our injuries of late have forced the way we have played on us.
McCarthy will be better as we get stronger now he is fit.
With Tosun now able to be a focal point he will blossom.
The way he won the ball an set Wilf off yesterday was brilliant!

I agree, I think he is only just reaching full match fitness and the best is yet to come. He is a very good player and it is really a toss up as to who should start as the 3 out of 4; Milivojevic, Kouyate, McCarthy, McArthur? My current preference is to leave Luka out.

Good to see his dead ball delivery. Hopefully he can keep that on full time. Finally we score from a corner

This could give us a useful alternative option. Our free kicks and corners have been so dire for ages. He also seemed to have a good relationship with Tosun, also ex Everton, that could be a positive.

I think there are many who judge players way too soon and expect them to play at their maximum after a couple of games.

McCarthy will be an asset next season after his run outs this season and a full pre season behind him, I expect all will be raving about his energy, tenacity and commitment.

Why do people not take a balanced view after games, players will have good performances and so-so performances maybe the next game but people post he was great this game then after the next game he was crap and fully get emotional about it!

We have the second best points tally at this stage in the prem and defensively we tend to be sound. McCarthy will be the cog that protects / screens the back 4 with aplomb next season.

Look at his qualities and compliment these as he is working his way back to his natural game and that will take this season for him to get into stride and pattern.

I agree - I was holding out for him but what concerned me was not his going in hard, he seemed to be doing it cos he was a fraction off the pace so had to make up for lack of anticipation, and anticipation is not directly connected to fitness levels, and some simple passes were going astray but he was wonderful yesterday, just when you give up you get pleasantly surprised - young prospects yes, but these are the types of signing we need to make, not marguee but bargain basement, like the Ayew signing - quality at great value.

I have to say we are really starting to see the best from McCarthy now. Strong in the tackle, has a good engine and his dead ball delivery is certainly no worse than Luka's! I thought he had another good game on Saturday and is proving to be another shrewd piece of business.

He’s getting better with more games. It might have helped him and us getting in the team without a full season ahead of him.

He had a good game.
Mick McCarthy was at the game on Saturday so might have attended to cast an eye over his namesake.

He was previously very well thought of at Everton. 2 full seasons and we have a huge bargain on our hands.

If you want to live in a world full of kindness, respect and love, try to show these qualities.

He could turn out to be an absolute bargain. Injury has hampered his career big time but he is a top player and will only get better for us.

Our board gets crucified for lack of signings in critical positions, and rightly so but a lot of credit needs to be given for Cahill, McCarthy, Ayew, Tomkins, Kouyate. 5 regular first teasers who didn’t break the bank.

Really growing in stature now. Just hopes he keeps his place. At long last probably through injury, squad rotation is starting to work. Just hope our manager tells the players to shoot a bit more.
