Substitutes were introduced in August 1965. Does anybody know who Palaces first substitute to come off the bench and score was. Can not find this information anywhere.
Will solve a discussion at the pub.

I can't see that question being answered. But, as a complete flyer, I'll say Keith Smith, who joined us from Peterborough around that time.

I do not know the answer so I contacted a fellow supporter who is far more erudite than 'Yours Truly' and he believes it could be Bobby Woodruff, whom he saw score from the penalty spot.
He claims he recalls this game as it was at A.Villa and he had never visited the ground before.
But alas he is somewhat advanced in years and his memory is not what it was in bygone days.

Someone else I have spoken to believes it could be Cliff Jackson. He has a vague recollection of Jackson scoring after coming on from the bench and if this is correct he might have been the first Palace substitute to score. But this chap is also 'ripe' in years !!

Woodruff and Jackson didn't join us till the start of the 66/67 season. That in itself doesn't prove anything, but one would think that during a full season of using subs (65/66) at least one of them would have scored (though I wouldn't bet on it!). Perhaps a little more relevantly as far as Woodruff is concerned, the first time we played Villa after the introduction of subs was in 67/68, meaning that we would have had to have gone two full seasons of using subs without one of them scoring for the Woodruff theory to be correct.

I suspect that this will run and run.

Keith Smith was our first substitute at home to Leyton Orient, 28th August 1965.
A game we won 2-1, so quite possible that he scored in this game.

And quite possible he didn’t

Cliff Jackson was our first goalscoring substitute when he came on for Len Tomkins at Ipswich on.March 30 1968. He scored a last minute goal to give Palace a 2-2 draw.

Well done, Willo, to your friend who's "ripe in years".

But it still surprises me that almost three seasons passed after subs were allowed before a Palace sub managed it.

One of my favorite players, particularly after the Fulham game.

The first season that subs were allowed you had to be injured to be replaced. No subs in cup games that season. It was right that Keith Smith was our first one used. The first one named v Birmingham.City on Saturday August 21 1965 was DavId Payne.
