And will China ban the disgusting markets that cuased this? I doubt it despite their claims.

No. Because even if they did, it would simply drive the trade underground, with even less oversight, and therefore higher probability of this kind of thing happening again.

So when the PL was being talked about and finally implemented they had meetings and made the rules.
At no point was the possibility of not being able to finish a season discussed.
In reference to team position and final outcome etc.
I can imagine something like tony the tea boy
" hey guys, what happens if the league starts and cannot end for whatever reason?
Do the teams get treated at the finish point as if they are in their final position?"

Scudamore
"Guffaw, guffaw dont be so stupid and pour my tea, that tony; is why you are the tea boy, never heard anything so stupid.
It would not stop even for a war so no point even putting it in the rules."

As they say fact is stranger than fiction.
Ironically if a rule was put in back then at conception then clubs would have to stick and abide by it. As you accept the rules when you take the sheckles.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing

Like some others have said, I see this suspension going on well beyond the beginning of April. The peak is still some way off and we’ve still got a quarter of the season to play. They won’t restart the season whilst cases are still on the increase...in a nutshell, it’s NOT going to get finished.

I genuinely think the current season will get written off as a Non event.

Leagues will stay as they are, no one will be awarded titles, promotion or relegation as NONE have been decided and we will all just re-start next season as if this one never happened.

It’s rubbish for a lot of teams for sure but sh*t happens!

The silver lining being that the scousers are 25 points clear, having NEVER won the Premier League and having not been crowned the top flight champions for 30 years... and it’s going to be declared Null & Void!

I’m not so sure. I think they will find some way to promote/relegate

La Liga already considering developing a formula, for example.

Surely this has precedent - there must have been one season where it either finished prematurely or one that had a pause and restarted?

A number of big games in Europe this week were held behind closed doors several thousand fans turned up anyway outside the ground which required police support. The whole point was not to put a strain on the emergency services.

I think the PL and EPL have taken note so I suspect playing behind closed doors may not work.

I reckon I can guess which club’s fans turn up to try and get in.

Not as the EPL.
If there wasnt all the dough involved then clubs would agree, but it's all about the jessie j.

Predictably Karen Brady has said that the season should be cancelled thus offering West ham a lifeline.

Other variations I have heard are:

1. End the season now all results stand as they are promote and relegate based on that. probably the harshest but fairest solution. The problem is that clubs will point out that the rules have changed intra season.

2. Complete the season which will over run into September this is very fair but maybe impractical.

Then shorten next season to catch up by cancelling FA and League cups and somehow reduce the number of games teams play. Something like everybody plays each other once and then there are mini leagues e.g. top group play each other once, middle and bottom or some variation.

If they can find a solution to reducing the fixture list the advantage of this is that everybody goes into the season knowing what the rules are at the start.

The influence of TV in sport, especially football.

Sky BT etc. have paid a fortune for the TV rights they are not going to be able to show it live for at least 1 month and probably a lot longer. This will cause a huge hole in their scheduling and their viewing figures will collapse after all you can only watch Man United the glory years so many times.

BT has already announced that it will not refund customers who are paying for BT Sport and getting repeats. No doubt Sky will take a similar stance so some unhappy customers will be trapped in a contract others will just cancel.

Even when sport resumes this will still be a major problem for TV. Assuming lots of games will be played in a fairly short space of time they will be forced to choose which games to show. The TV schedule is drawn up so that each week the big boys are shown live normally on a Sunday or Monday when the schedule is clear for best ratings. At best they may show 3/4 games a night but that will split the viewing figures.

Football will not admit it but TV is going to have a big say in how this season and next pans out. They are owed their pound of flesh and behind all the "we are supporting everyone in football BS" they will be pointing out that the PL especially owes them so many live games.

We can only speculate on what the outcome is but the PL cannot afford to upset the money men.

The Mail are suggesting that the season ends now the top 2 are promoted from the EFL with no relegation and then next season 5 clubs are relegated.

They also suggest Liverpool will be handed the title although I cannot see any circumstances when they wouldn't the thought of that lot crying for the next 30 years....

That's a typically daft suggestion from Daily Mail with no sensible logic behind it.

The season has to finish for financial reasons if no other and if there is no end in sight in April then I would guess the leagues would resume but behind closed doors

Yep that's how it'll be I reckon. Maybe with FA cup shunted to the end like a mini tournament as the priority will be to finish the league asap. Thank God we're in a relatively safe position without any of this likely to affect our final league position. Financially though I guess this will have a massive impact on clubs and so many bizarre connotations.

I.e if the season does take until July/ August to complete can clubs still play out of contract players?
