Many schools across the UK will not be able to remain open past the end of the week, says a head teachers' leader.

ASCL general secretary Geoff Barton said experienced head teachers in large schools were saying they would struggle to stay up and running past Friday.

It comes after teaching unions spoke of the "intolerable pressure" of staying open as more and more staff get sick.

The government's chief scientific adviser has reiterated that schools will remain open for now.

But Sir Patrick Vallance, speaking to MPs at a hearing on Tuesday afternoon, said school closures were still "on the table", as one of the measures that could be used to fight the virus.

At his press conference on Tuesday afternoon, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said school closures were under "continuous review".

You could say it's a NO-BRAINER decision, but that would be over-estimating the capabilities of the UK leadership.

I will not be surprised if pubs and restaurants etc etc are instructed to close.

That's a great idea. Let's close all the schools and lose three quarters of the country's nurses who would have to stay at home to look after them

My thoughts exactly. I was in our local Asda at midnight last night, and they had just put out a load of toilet rolls. Within minutes they were wiped-out by a large group of Asians. I live in a part of Kent that doesn't have a large population of Asians so am expecting to see Asda 'Shades' bog roll for sale in the local corner shops at £20 a pack.

Yep, you’ll find the better off pensioners in Sainsbury’s with the men making sure they get to the alcohol aisle sweeping up dozens of bottles of wine and 4 packs of beer. Unless you’re well over 80 you have very little memory or experience of the war and pulling together. Rationing of course continued until 1952 wasn’t it, but that was forced and then the generation of starting to be able to do and have what they wanted started from there.

I’m not picking on one particular age group because I’ve seen some embarrassing things, and of course your self raising flour angry shopper with a trolley filled with toilet roll.

With few people working and able to get to the shops at opening times it’s anyone’s guess when this calms down.

All this sitting around eating into large supplies of food and drink is going to do wonders for health and the NHS.
