Over the whole of the S West (Somerset, Devon, Cornwall and parts of Wilts and Dorset) there are 140 registered cases - London alone has over 1200, so at a time when we are being told to keep a safe distance and self-isolate, why would Cornwall want a whole bunch of people 'moving in' from a high risk area to a region that has a higher than average proportion of elderly already?

the joke is that speaking to a mate who lives in st agnes yesterday he said cornwall is more or less operating as usual and people are just going about their everyday lives.

Rick Stein must be feeling the pinch then as he owns most of Cornwall

That is only being paid to companies that keep on their staff and I guess that most restaurants and pubs will just lay off their staff so won't be able to claim.

One of my sons is a chef and he expects to lose his job completely.

Then there are the small companies where the directors pay themselves the bare minimum and take the rest in dividends as they will only get 80% of the bare minimum as it will have to be justified by Paye records

My son was just about to start his 2nd season at a theme park. On returning home from a training day on Wednesday he received an email saying his contract was being changed to zero hours, if he did not agree he would have to advise them by 26th March (ie no agree no job). I am hoping this will now mean his initial contract should stand and he at least gets 80%. Any thoughts?
He has emailed for clarity.
I really don’t understand who will get this and can companies just lay people off without repercussions? Surely this is the idea of the payments?

Sure me and some neighbours will be putting up barricades in our street, don't want the wrong types coming here.

Shame because I heard Truro was such a lovely welcoming place.

There are lots of people already on zero-hours contracts who will get naff all.
My understanding is that an already agreed and signed contract requires both parties to agree amendments. Ideally he would get 80% of the first contract, but I'm not sure if the company are within their rights to just terminate.
And on a zero-hours contract you won't even get sick pay

Thanks he has not agreed to change yet. We shall wait and see, he was only p/t on minimum wage but getting something would be nice and morale boosting.

I wouldn't say we are going on as normal. lots of shops are closed, the number of people around is way down. The Penryn ASDA is always choca, but the smaller ones are only a little busier.
Can get toilet paper, pasta and bread, although eggs seem to have disappeared.
As for people coming down, we only have one main hospital Treliske, at the best of times it's full to capacity. We have 16 known cases, not a lot I know, but people are really scared.
Plus there's an innate dislike of 'outsiders.' I've been here 35 years and I still get 'you're not Cornish, are you?'
And Falmouth is very cosmopolitan in comparison to other places, even Truro.
Stay safe my friends. These people who don't want you now will be after your money soon
