With so much time on my hands, my mind has been wandering all over the place, and the memory of a very strange incident floated into my mind. A home match against Wolves, about 20 years ago at a guess. An evening match, I think - or at least the lights were on. Wolves had a corner, where the teams come out. In a pre-arranged move the Wolves player passed the ball a couple of yards to a colleague, who tapped it over the line for a goal kick. Cue for loads of applause from the home fans for a very sporting gesture. But I just can't remember what led up to this incident. Any offers?

I can remember that game. That particular incident started with a stoppage in play near the half way, on the restart Wolves kicked the ball back to Speroni who tried to collect it but spilled it out for a corner. So 2 Wolves players came forward and performed the act that you described. This was the only game that I have ever left early because we were embarrassingly bad.

Think I vaguely remember that incident. One would imagine the the ball had clearly gone out of play from a wolves player but the ref had given a corner and wasn’t going to change his decision.

Also remember another game against wolves probably in the 70’s when a Palace player had a shot into the side netting at the Holmesdale end, the ref gave a goal, the Wolves players naturally went ballistic, after a few chaotic moments the ref asked Steve Kember if it was a goal to which Kember said it wasn’t. Think Kember got some sportsman of the month award or something similar.

I bet the ref never asked Clive Allen!

It was Kolinko in goal, not Speroni.
I remember them booting it out and it was going 'bout a yard or two wide of the goal but he dived to save it and gave away a corner.

Is that a keyboard error? Speroni and Kolinko weren't born in 1971.

Another question. In trying to work out when this incident took place I scanned through our results against Wolves, and I see that in 1996/97 we played four league matches against them: on 23rd November, 15th February, 10th May and 14th May. What was that all about?

The Terry Wharton "goal" against Forest was in 1971.

Doh! I knew there would be a good explanation. I wonder whether the same will apply to my question about the four league games against Wolves.

Could it have been the last home game in the 2000/01 season before the great escape wins at Pompey and Stockport?
If so, it was Alan Smith's last game as manager in a 0-2 defeat and a lot of season tickets thrown on the pitch in disgust!
