Uber drivers don't ply for hire, they along with all the other minicab drivers can only take pre-booked fares. These fares have to be booked through an operator, then passed on to the driver, anyone caught taking fares without a pre booking can get a large fine, points on their licence and lose their PHV licence.
Quite a few black cabs use an app as well although plying for hire is better for them as they can drive around to look for business, they also have the advantage of having taxi ranks they can wait in for customers to come to them, they also don't need to pay the congestion charge or ULEZ charge.

They ply by parking up outside venues and wait for an approach, touting as we used to say, and they had an office in Amsterdam for first few years with no telephone number, and no way to complain if the driver had taken you on a 200 mile detour as happened a few times, also no paying tax for first years in business,

They aldo had 1300 drivers with no dbs certificate , actually fake ones that tfl covered up and have only traced 2000 of them in 2 years, so 9000 untraceable, uninsured (for carrying passengers anyway), still out there. driving in London, the number of rapes and sexual assaults has gone through the roof! The taxi trade had one rapist in 400 years, warboys, but this lot have had 150 every year, but tfl love them as they get £300 every licence, and they have 120,000 out there, lots of lolly for mayor khan an tfl!If boris and the rest are prepared to cripple an industry full of ex military, right wing minded people, just to turn a few quid in given shares, god help the rest of the working population! We could have uber plumbing, where you don"t need a corgi gas safety cert, but are half the price, illegals welcome, long as a few shares are exchanged in the CON government negotiations!

So being self employed, doing extortionate priced cash jobs and not paying tax is exclusive to self employed uber drivers. I think 80% furlough payments to many who are now potless has pretty much proved that isnt the case. How many times do you know of a 200 mile detour as a few could be quite a lot.

Seen a few in the paper , of the 200 mile range, but got lots of complaints every day of drivers going on detours that just clock up an extra ten or twenty quid, also uber surcharge up to 10x the fare, thats in the case of an emergency like the london borough market stabbings, great business you might think? Black taxi drivers were taking people out of the area for nothing, just as they do on rememberance sunday for the old war fellas going to the cenotaph, you probably wouldn"t agree with that im guessing, better to surcharge? Im out of the game now anyway, concentrating on my properties, but it2s a race to the bottom in the work p[lace with these in charge, look out for uber plumbing, uber carers and uber anything, no qualifications, no crb check, no earning minimum wage(uber drivers only arn around £5 an hour, thats why they work 20 hours a day), and no company tax pay in great britain, just a few million shared to CON hq! Be lucky out there!

Don’t like people and small talk that much. I was a despatch rider.

Hope you are paying your tax on your portfolio. I mean the correct amount not cash in one account and cheques in another. Uber carers may well have slowed down C19 if they work 20 hours a day. Less staff changes.

In the guardian?
I'm not against charity taxi rides no. I think its good that they do that and take the sick kids to the coast. That is off on a bit of a tangent to the discussion though tbh. Black cabs had a monopoly helped by mayor khant. Passengers in london have always been held to ransom up until addison lee and uber rocked up. If they are so great why have they lost customers and I think john warbouys was a cabbie and hes a lovely bloke. Not.

All this anti Uber stuff is very old Croydon proud, and don't forget that it was Johnson and not Khan who gave them their licence, in fact Khan has been holding them to account since he got in, along with trying to clear up the rest of the very expensive mistakes that Johnson made.

I''m not a fan of Uber they seem to exploit their staff across the world. That said it is ridiculous that TFL are not allowed to control the number of licenses issued and certainly disgraceful that checks criminal and identity were not done properly.

Black cabs are quick to defend their rights yet the model has changed driven by market forces. If they want any sympathy then they should look at their own pricing structure. You would expect to pay more for a black cab due to the type of vehicle they drive plus the "knowledge" however they are far too expensive and need to reduce their fares if they want my support.
