In mid-March, Stanford’s Nobel laureate Michael Levitt (biophysicist and professor of structural biology) discussed the “natural experiment” of the Diamond Princess cruise ship, a virtually perfect sealed petri-dish disproportionately filled with the most susceptible age and health groups.

Here, despite the virus spreading uncontrolled onboard for at least two weeks, infection only reached 20% of passengers and crew (an “upper bound” to infection levels?); Levitt concluded that we must have high levels of innate immunity that can clear the virus. And using very simple mathematics (not “15,000 lines of uncommented code” like Neil Ferguson) he demonstrated that the virus’s spread had never been exponential.....this guy was just flat out ignored both by governments and most media.

So essentially there has always been a fair level of innate immunity from this virus amongst the population and it's likely that early testing won't pick up on just how widespread that is.

I’d love to know what went on and has been going on in number 10 since day one. I think there is probably some degree of in so deep so have to stay in and keep it up. These furlough dates should be brought forward. You’ll see the mood change then.

He was ignored because our knowledge of covid-19 has moved on and claims that 20% may be an upper band does not align with the facts. Over 60% of those on this French ship tested positive: [Link] 36 out of 38 residents of this care home tested positive: [Link] 30 out of 34 in this home tested positive: [Link]

While clearly many people are asymptomatic, it unfortunately appears likely that most people have no natural immunity.

Running around like headless chickens, no doubt. It's an unenviable task really and like many countries, they're winging it. It will be interesting to see what happens if the numbers start going up again. If they just go with it due to additional capacity there will be a perception with many, as there is with some already, that the last two months were a waste of time. Whereas if they row back and we're back in lockdown mode again, how many times are we going to repeat that, and how can any business function in such an environment?

I am of the mind that those in non vulnerable groups should wear masks, wash hands frequently, social distancing where possible and being mindful of their responsibility towards others and keep the wheels turning. That's our best chance of keeping it a manageable situation in all regards. The whole country can't hide away for a vaccine that might never materialise, even though I am optimistic that eventually it will. Those that want or may need to keep a low profile for now are not commonly an age bracket that works, and so have that option at their disposable.

As for the second sentence....I think your views on moral responsibility somewhat differ in some areas to mine....so what you think doesn't resonate.

That he gave estimates that subsequently proved incorrect is a common phenomenon of this crisis. He would have not made them up but acted on the best advice available to him. Hindsight being what it is can make the really foolish seem wise, and the very clever seem foolish. We haven't needed the Nightingale Hospitals. Yet! But we have them now, ready for a second wave and so the NHS can resume some of it's currently paused work. I guess your Javits centre falls into the same category.

Yes, I dig at Trump because his performance during this crisis is a disgrace and it needs to be called out. Yes, he agreed to send the hospital ship, but made sure he was photographed as it left the dock so everyone would know. If he had refused to send it he would have been hung out to dry!

Imagine my surprise? In the left leaning Guardian. Still it's not Trump so it doesn't matter. As you were.

There's a difference here between environments that contain confined spaces....as in care homes and a ship comprised of young men working together, also in confined spaces, than the general population.

When the results come back from testing done in states and regions I don't think I've seen an infection rate above New York's that was in the twenties I think.

This test with a 20 minute result if it works will be very useful. If it's a goer then it really will depend on our ability to take one for the team if results on ourselves come back positive. Maybe a certain legality on either isolation and/ or reporting a positive test needs adding.
