I am of the mind that those in non vulnerable groups should wear masks, wash hands frequently, social distancing where possible and being mindful of their responsibility towards others and keep the wheels turning. That's our best chance of keeping it a manageable situation in all regards.

Can you really see that happening as you only have to look at the photographs of people crowding on to the beaches yesterday to see that far too many couldn't care less

Fruit pickers to be exempt from quarantine measures. Let’s hope they are not Covid positive or showing symptoms when they arrive, remain in their 4 to a caravan accommodation and not visit any local shops! Remember to wash your fruit and veg

Why haven’t you? You could do a job swap with some needy individual.

My son tried but was told he was not suitable because:
He had no previous experience:
He had to live on site sharing a caravan with 3-4 others ( wonder if they will have been tested):
Would have to pay towards lodging ( out of minimum wage).
Check out how many Brits applied and how many were offered jobs. This is about farmers, basically, promoting slave labour.
It really annoys me that it has been put about that Brits are too lazy.
Do you agree that these people should not be quarantined but you would have to be?

We should stop a lot of this and all just accept a few pence more on our fruit and veg. Problem is the supermarkets set the price and everyone has to work around that. Supermarkets are fear too powerful. Regulation is necessary.

I don't see anything new here.

Pay is low and conditions are less than appealing to keep prices low. As has been mentioned, increase the price of the product – fine, but sales will decrease, farms will move away from growing but along with regulation you'll be able to improve the working conditions. Or make more profit...

It's not as simple as improve conditions, hire more british workers and ban migrant labour. That would have significant negative effects and actually reduce availability of jobs and british produce.

It's unfair to say people are 'lazy' but 'picky?' (no pun intended) – certainly. Students work like this in Australia to get by all the time, but mature british workers are so used to being in non-labour based jobs that require such high levels of exertion as sitting in chairs and walking to get a tea that they simply cannot bring themselves to do these kind of jobs. Until they lose their corona payouts...

If people weren't being furloughed, the fields would be full of british workers. As always, it's unappealing until it's not. There is still a choice being made here – it's not like they're not being offered jobs, they just come with conditions that most british workers would turn their noses up at. And that has always been the issue.

'Nick Marston, the chair of British Summer Fruits, said the business model of fruit farming had been “structured around a non-UK workforce for many years” because UK workers had shunned the work: “Farms are receiving large numbers of applications and I think it would be unfair to say the industry is not accommodating local workforce.”

I think you’re being a tad harsh on people not wanting to stay in the caravan on the farm because the recruiter makes money back off that. (I have feelings on 15-20 in a house working elsewhere)

I’d be interested to know how little the price would have to rise for better pay seeing as they pick thousands an hour and it seems the supermarket takes most of the profit. Looks like there’s room for more regulation than you think before people stop buying.

Perhaps. But the general point stands, and the irony of that is inescapable. If it's not a caravan it will be a dorm. Can't see it making much difference to the average British workers motivation

I would also be interested to know the fallout in terms of prices and more importantly viability of enterprise but the rose tinted simplicity of some on here of 'just get british workers to do it and it will all be fine' is ridiculous
