There is obviously a political element to people wanting Cummings out, if you see my posts in the other thread I have not pretended like there isn't. With that being said, this story genuinely cuts deeper than tribal alliances. There has been an anti-elite atmosphere fostered in the country now for years, that has now become directed at what many people view to be another elite flouting the rules.

Johnson stood solely on 'getting Brexit done this year', no extension, 'do or die'. If he can be manipulated by another adviser in the event Cummings leaves to extend the transition then he is a terrible leader, simple as that.

Within the minds of Brexit opponents any watering down is a victory.

The removal of Cummings takes them nearer to that.

We shall see over the next few months how regularly the argument for an extension is pushed for.

Too late for "a few months". They have until the end of June I believe.

This is their final push for getting that extension. Earlier on, they were told they had 2 weeks to get rid of Cummings while he and BJ were out with covid, and had an extension agreement hammered out (the EU would request, so the UK could save face)

Then Cummings returned and put a very quick stop to it.

Interesting.

This episode, where they have tried so hard to get him sacked is only going to make him stronger now. Waverers have seen just how strongly backed he is.

Johnson's poll ratings showing an improvement.

There's a recognition here that he has displayed backbone and shown that the media don't get to decide who runs the country.

...and he will proceed to dismantle the rotten core of the BBC and civil service. I can't wait.

EU offers us a 2 year extension which Boris rejects outright. I am not surprised the EU is still playing the old delaying game.

What I did not like was that Barnier has written to the leaders of the opposition parties. If I was Boris I would tell him you are negotiating with the UK government and no one else do that again and we walk away.

Nissan closing its Barcelona plant and expanding Sunderland.

Even though this is on the BBC it can't possibly be true as we were told that Nissan were a prime example of a company that would turn its back on Britain and concentrate on the remainder of Europe. And without a trade deal too??!

Thinking about it, the timing of this can't be coincidental. I've cut Cummins a bit of slack until now, but now he's got to go. That trip up to the North East was just a cover, clearly, and he drove to Barnard Castle in his Nissan to hold secret talks with the company's chief execs. He obviously pleaded with them to make an announcement now to get all those stupid people of Sunderland who didn't know what they were truly voting for in voting Leave to feel better and give them some hope, especially as they turned against their traditional own in the last election and repeated their foolish voting behaviour of just three years' previously.

Living down here does have some advantages. At least you can see them cry.

Massive EU bailout on the way. 750bn - apparently we all have to p(l)ay our part. Ireland has been classified as well off so I probably won't be posting for much longer, as I won't be able to afford having internet. My tax is already out of control for absolutely no return; here comes some more invented taxes that nobody wants. Austerity here we come, again. Deja vu.

An update

"The British government said Thursday that it will grant hundreds of thousands of Hong Kong residents greater visa rights if China doesn’t scrap a planned new security law for the semi-autonomous territory.

U.K. Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab said about 300,000 people in Hong Kong who hold British National (Overseas) passports would be able to stay in Britain for 12 months instead of the current six if China does not rethink its plan. Raab said the length of stay also would be extendable and provide “a pathway” to U.K. citizenship."
